Is it normal for pool level to lower after closing?

I lowered it 6” below the tile line when I closed it for the winter a month ago but it seems the water level is about a foot or more lower since then. Is this normal?

Not normal. Sounds like there’s a leak.

I think I may know what happened. I may have a hole in my tarp cover and I think my cover pump was pumping water from the pool. I guess my question now is can I add water back to the pool to get the level back up or will that mess up the winter balance? It is a gunite pool.

Just add water to get your water level back up to support your cover. There is no winter chemical balance.
