I have two very old Jandy valves and both of course have the little black cap on each end. I never understood HOW they worked as I inherited my pool when I purchased the house. But what I do know is they have always kind of "flopped" around. My pump has been holding prime great, that was until I accidentally knocked off one of the black caps. Now I can't get the air out of the system and it seems like the little valve is allowing some to be pulled in. I am curious how these even work as the cap says "twist" on it. But it seems like it was barely hanging onto a diaphragm of some sort. Obviously I never greased the valves, but I can't see how "turning" it would do anything. I am going to go out on a limb and guess I might need to replace them, or at least the one for now. But I was curious if there was anyway one of those ports could leak air? And how they even work?
