Is an air leak from grease port (Jandy) possible?

I have two very old Jandy valves and both of course have the little black cap on each end. I never understood HOW they worked as I inherited my pool when I purchased the house. But what I do know is they have always kind of "flopped" around. My pump has been holding prime great, that was until I accidentally knocked off one of the black caps. Now I can't get the air out of the system and it seems like the little valve is allowing some to be pulled in. I am curious how these even work as the cap says "twist" on it. But it seems like it was barely hanging onto a diaphragm of some sort. Obviously I never greased the valves, but I can't see how "turning" it would do anything. I am going to go out on a limb and guess I might need to replace them, or at least the one for now. But I was curious if there was anyway one of those ports could leak air? And how they even work?

Thanks

The grease cap is threaded in, when it broke off there's still a small threaded piece left inside. Take a small blade screwdriver and gently push into this broken piece and turn ccw to remove. Sometimes you can heat the end so it will push in to the plastic easier. You can replace with a plastic or brass 1/8" plug and a little Teflon tape

Opps,
I over tightened the ‘cap’ and twisted the whole unit almost off.
It looks like a sliver of plastic is just keeping it together AND I’m getting lots of bubbles in the pump.

Is it an easy to fix ‘kit’?
