My Daughter's iPhone 7 will no longer allow WiFi to work. Apparently this is a common issue with iPhone. I cannot put into words how much I despise Apple products - even working on it for a few minutes gets my blood absolutely boiling. It has got to be the most counter-intuitive operating systems ever invented. She did the network reset which does it's thing and sometimes the WiFi will work for a few minutes and then the phone reboots and WiFi is greyed out again.

Anyone have any advice?

Try

-Forget the Network
- Power OFF and ON
- Add network

What version IOS?

You have 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz network or both?

lol - that would be a GREAT idea if the WiFi worked. It can't be turned on it is greyed out. IOS is 12.3 something. Can't update IOS either since Apple, in their infinite wisdom, will not allow the iPhone to update via the cellular connection (4G/LTE). iPhone has been factory reset many times. We tried the freeze method as well no luck.

You can update IOS using iTunes on a PC or MAC using a USB connection.

Or take it into an Apple Store and look helpless and say it is broke. Let then update the IOS and see if it is a hardware problem.

I tried itunes and could not get itunes to see it. I did get it to be seen by the O/S but itunes never had it in the list.

Sounds to me like a trip to the Genius Bar is needed. Something must be screwed up between your phones settings and the iOS. It probably needs a full factory reset and then an upgrade to iOS 13. But you need to backup your phone first via iTunes or else you’ll lose everything.

Was this phone a previously used model or a “jail-break” phone? Sometimes jail-breaking an iPhone incorrectly can cause all sorts of unintended consequences.

I just made an appt for the genius bar for Tuesday. This is not jail-broken. Bought new and replaced already once under warranty (last year). We were able to get it to work long enough today to get onto 13. Then it scrammed and wifi doesn't work again. Apple support could do nothing over the phone they went right to the genius bar. This is a very common problem with Apple iphones apparently it has been happening regularly since the 4. I have never once heard of any issue like this with Android. This is another reason I really hate Apple.

If I have to touch that phone one more time I will end up in a mental asylum. I can see how Apple gets you to upgrade now. I would rather buy a new one than have to work with IOS trying to fix this thing again.

That's why Apple opened Apple Stores all over. It is easier to walk in and have them do their magic with iDevices.

I’ve owned iPhones since iPhone 4 and I currently have a 7 plus. I’m due for an upgrade and I’m currently saving up for the 11 pro. My wife as well. Never have seen this issue once and aside from usual little bugs that pop up with major OS upgrades, I’ve never had an issue with upgrading Apple tech across multiple major iOS releases. I ditched Android and WinDOHs long ago and have never been happier. But I concede, like Chevy and Ford truck owners, neither side will ever convince the other.

I think the Genius Bar is your best bet at a resolution but I would definitely consider that there’s a good chance of an underlying hardware problem. So you may be buying your daughter an new iPhone 11 Pro before I get mine ?

Maybe a forced restart? Press and hold the Home button. Press and hold the Power button. Ignore everything on the screen until you get the black screen with the white apple. Then you can release the buttons.

My wife's iPhone 7 plus camera stopped working over a year ago. It ended up being a hardware failure. Sorry to hear about it, it was frustrating for us too. They'll run a comprehensive diagnostic program at the store, probably hardware related failure for you. We were offered a new same model phone for $200-300 and took it. Was either that or credit towards new iPhones, weren't ready to do that yet.

EDIT: today's repair cost at the Apple store. iPhone Repair - Official Apple Support

I’ve never had that problem with my iPhones, and I’ve been using them since 5. I just upgraded my 7+ to the XR and It’s noticeably faster. I’m not a picture happy person, so the 11 is not worth the money. The XR and the 11 are basically the same phone. (Besides, the camera on the 11 pro is fuggly as heck. And as much as I like me some Arnold, I’m not sporting the mandatory case it comes with.)

Got my appointment at 4:30 EST today. I'll let you know what they say. Hopefully just software but I have a feeling it is hardware. Since we just got a new replacement for a warranty issue last year at no charge, I am hoping if it is hardware again they will replace it for free again. I was actually pleasantly surprised last time at how easy it was to work with the Genius bar. With what Apple charges for the phones I guess it is the least they can do. Wish me luck!

Almost forgot!

We got there and they ran the diagnostics which said the wifi and Bluetooth controllers were fried and those components are not repairable. So it's @$300 for a new iPhone 7. But, they'll still give us $150 trade value on it. A new Xr is $599 - the $150 so $450. My daughter agreed to pay $150 and i covered the rest so she's got a new red iPhone Xr. She's the happiest girl in 10th grade and said she went from a mediocre phone to the best of all her friends. I'm thinking of getting the stupid Apple Care on it it's like $8/month.

The XR is a great phone! I’m loving the wireless charging, it gives you the flexibility to place charging pads in different places.
If your daughter is prone to dropping her phone a lot, then yes, grab the AppleCare. If she’s good with it, a glass screen protector and a good case will be all she needs. I’m a big fan of Spigen cases, I’ve used them on all my IPhones and they offer a great deal of protection without being bulky. This is the one I’m using on my XR.Spigen
