Hello everyone,

My name is Rick, and we live in Beaumont, TX.... well almost... we move in tomorrow. Our 90's house comes with a 13k gallon in-ground pool. The plaster is older and needs to be replaced soon (according to a pool guy). It has three pumps, cartridge filter, and a non-working heater (which I will look into that down the road!)

I have brought a few samples down to the store... and so far have only purchased chlorine and dip sticks (not sure of the name... but dip it in the pool and wait 15 seconds for the colors to change). I gather from reading a few posts... I will get to stop doing that soon!

Biggest issue we have / will have are the trees. We have 20 of them that want drop their leaves in the pool every minute! The 3 wheel Polaris we currently have does a decent job picking them up... but 1 minute after it shuts off... there are new leaves in the pool. Other problem is the dirt / algae on the plaster... it goes "poof" when I sweep it. The Polaris doesn't seem to pick it up or be able to trap it in the bag.... so I am looking at a Dolphin robot to help in that regard. Recommendations welcome!

Other than that... can't wait to get moved in and swimming. Thanks for allowing me in!
Rick

 Welcome to TFP!!!

3 pumps?!?!

Get one of the recommended test kits on order, ASAP: Test Kits Compared
The TF-100 is the best value.
And stop letting the pool store test your water (and toss out the test strips).

If you have any sign of algae (sounds like you do), then you need to follow the SLAM Process process to eradicate it.

I forgot I also purchased a Phosphate something something from Leslies. I remembered when I read about it in the ABC info. I haven't opened it yet... maybe I can return it!

I would certainly try to return it. If they will only give you credit, get some muriatic acid or liquid chlorine or some toys.

If you ever do want to lower your phosphates, there are brands that do a MUCH better job than what most pool stores sell.

Welcome New Guy! Ignore the Pool $tore advice and listen to the folks here. The only things I got from the pool store of any value were the test sample bottle, unicorn floatie cup holders, and lots of five-gallon buckets (great for painting and car washing). No one here will try to sell you magic potions. The test kit you need will cost you about same as a couple bottles of the snake oil.

Best of luck!
