IntelliPro pump issue

After getting almost 20 years out of our original pump it finally gave up the ghost and we had our pool company install a new IntelliPro VSF pump about 3-4 years ago. This week we opened the pool and the display screen was dead. I can use the egg timer buttons to turn the pump on for about 8 hours but I have to do this every morning. I called the pool company and they are going to send someone out to look at it but they said the electronic control panel alone is over $1,000 for the part if it needs to be replaced and of course the manufacturer only provides a one year warranty so it would not be covered.

Is this common for this part to fail so quickly? We don't really want to spend $1000 plus every few years. If these fail so easily I would prefer to go back to the far less expensive and more reliable simple pump we had for 20 years.

Thanks

Government regulations require main filter pumps to be variable speed. So if your old pump was a single speed, it is not even allowed to be used.
Is this a common issue, to have the electronics (the drive) go after just a few years? The pump is only 3-4 years old and the pool company just told me its $1500 to replace the drive. I looked online and the replacement is easy to do but it doesn't save me much since the part alone is about $1250. It seems crazy to have to spend that amount of money every couple of years. We live inthe Northeast. I always put a tarp over the pool equipment when I close up the pool for the winter but I'm wondering if I should remove the drive and take it inside for the winter since its probably easier than detaching the entire pump and carrying that into the basement

So the drive is not bad, the touchscreen is.

Investigate IntelliConnect. Might be able to take the place of the screen. Do your due diligence.
If just controlling a pump, then the IntelliSync might work.

This is unusual. My Pentair VS pump is in its 9th year. Runs quiet and no issues. But no winter.

I know this is a really LATE reply to your post - but I still felt compelled to reply. I HOPE you were able to find a fix - and NOT have to replace your unit!

We experienced this same issue - NO DISPLAY - just after our warranty expired (don't cha know?).
When I researched for answers (years back) I came across someone who "wrote" down (no video) his entire fix for this issue.

AND for me - the SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM turned out to be simply adding some insulation tape around the borders!
I removed the display from the unit - brought it into the house - laid it out on a towel on the counter - took it apart - removed the cheap, flat, original "foam" padding around the edge and installed NEW THICKER INSULATION tape - re-assembled and re-installed at pump. That is all I did. Took me about 30 minutes total.

There's an older post on here from someone else who has great photos of his work!
