Infinity Pool Edge & Glass Tile

Hello all. I have an infinity pool edge with glass tile on the back face where the water falls over. Our water is very hard, and our pool service pretty much is on top of trying to minimize the issues because of this. There is a large amount of scale that develops because of the water over the edge because of the irregularity of the joints between the tiles. We also have issues with tiles popping off [they are small size] due to freeze/thaw conditions in the winter in addition to the size of the tile itself.

Because of this, we have contemplated removing the glass tile from the back face of the infinity edge and were wondering if this could be stuccoed/plastered with a quartz plaster type of surface [which is what we have in the pool]. Has anyone heard of doing this and any thoughts from the experts out there?

BaseCrete would be a better choice under plaster. Laticrete makes a similar product.

Please don't let someone talk you into pebble on the exposed side of the weir wall. Plaster, quartz and pebble need to be completely submerged 100% of the time. The wet/dry cycle leads to guaranteed failure.

Yes certainly NOT using pebble on the exposed (or negative side) of the weir! Thanks for the info. After speaking with Laticrete, they do not have a product that Pebble adheres. So i will contact BaseCrete. For my set-up, i think i will used BaseCrete on the interior, negative side, and the inner and outter gutter walls. Do you have any good installers you could reccomend in the southern california area, Brian? Thx for all your help!!

You might also consider Masterseal 581 (formerly Thoroseal) along with the acrylic modifier. I am using this for my infinity wall, waterline tile, spa, and concrete storage/bunker. It is made to resist both positive and negative water pressure. It is cement based; so if you coat too far down, it will not be a problem for plaster/pebble to stick to it.
