I'm a long time pool owner and at my wits end trying to get my pool in shape!

Thanks again! I didn't choose not to re #46. I just completely missed it. I'll have to try that = leaving grids out.
Then I need to get back to the way it was 3 or more years ago, if at all possible. I've gotten the pool in shape but its been much more work last 1 or 2 years; and much more difficult to keep it that way.
Anyway, one step at a time Get clear first, then, if necessary, try to fix whatever has changed....

We can help you get the pool into shape. Maybe better shape then it has ever been.

But it is a process with many steps along the way. Let's take them one step at a time and not get ahead of things.

Not much time right now but I cleaned the filter but left it out. I put in 3 gal, which was close to the right slam amount at about 4:30. I just did the drop test a few minutes ago. It took 80 ! drops to change to clear.
10 for CC. I've been getting questionable results on the drop test before. I tried the simple test also w/5 drops. Would guess from that reading FC at 10 +. I'm not trusting the TF-100 FC results.
Can anyone explain 79 drops to me... (Have gotten high readings twice before.)

Are you using a 10ml sample or a 25ml sample for the 80 drops?

To continue: I got my TF-100 a couple weeks ago.
The first test I did with it took 27 drops to change pink to clear. My actual FC couldn't have been over 1.5
The 2nd test was similar - 22 drops when the pool was low on chlorine. Both CC tests were 8 drops.
The 3rd test on 7-26 was 4 = 2 FC = too high I believe. 6 drops CC = 3.
This afternoon it took 5 or 6 drops before slamming; Should have been more like 1 or 1.5 FC. CC=3.5.
3 or 4 hours later, as I said in prior post 79-80 drops.
I'm using the simpler version of pool math to figure out how much chlorine to add. I downloaded the app on my laptop, but can't get it to work yet... Must go till later....

I'm doing the slam as best as I can, but as I have never shocked my pool without the filter in the tank, am somewhat unsure what the pool water should look like when algae is dead but still in pool.
Water clear, or somewhat clear?
Bottom of pool ? White? ~ (It's now a very light green: hazy-can't see bottom.)
I haven't been running my Polaris 360 as there is a wire mesh filter in the 1.5" hose inlet and it clogs up in 20 or 30 minutes. Not possible for me to clean out that frequently. I'm considering leaving the filter out but a bit afraid of it clogging/damaging the sweep. Sweep bag is a fine mesh; will dead algae go thru?
Should I start a new post re issues I'm having with the chlorine drop test ?

I would guess you should see all color of pool water (greens/yellows) disappear and would be blue/cloudy. If you stopped the pump long enough, the dead algae cells would likely fall to pool floor. Sounds like you need to keep going with the chlorine additions and testing, but hopefully are starting to see results!

Algae shouldn't hurt your sweep but also won't pick up any of the microscopic dead cells.

Cloudy/milky usually means you either killed or mostly killed the alage. If you haven't already, you should see the FC holding better between ads. At that point, it's no longer growing exponentially and the battle changes from a chemical battle to a mechanical one. Put the filter back in service when you are able to be around in case the psi rises quickly. It may need a few rounds before it calms down with the need for cleanings.

Keep the FC up even when it's holding well until you pass an OCLT. Don't even bother with them until you have stoopid clear water, with no poofing anywhere with the brush.

Thanks. Take a look at my Tuesday posts. The chlorine drop tests are coming out showing me that i have a high FC. I'm having to use/guess with the simpler tests with shades of yellow. I'm confused why the TF-100 is giving me 70 or 80 drops to turn pink to clear. Yesterday 68 to turn almost red to clear...
I'm not worried about algae doing anything to my sweep. More like small tree twigs etc.
Must manually clean the filter/big job for me. No backwash system. Long story/C earlier posts if you wish.

I saw those. I'd email [email protected] and let Nate know about the drop issue. One way or another, he'll get you fixed up.

I saw those too, but at some point, you're going to have to filter out the dead algae. Waiting until now was a wise move with the PITA that it is.

Thanks for the referral to Nate. I will do that.
<G> You wouldn't believe how many times I've spend most of the day cleaning the filter, 2-3 times a week.
And yes, it's waiting for me to put it back in. Hopefully soon, as my cards are feeling chlorine/DE.
Hummn. OK, what is PITA...

Pics today, Friday, before shocking. Nautilus 48 DE filter not put back in yet. Leave it out still...?
Tried running my Polaris 360 all night without the filter/screen. Backup valve was working before. Now it's in backup mode all the time. Drats! It's just one thing after another. I was finally able to get it apart; checking it out later....

I see a LOT more blue than before. Keep doing what you are doing tonight.

If you are not working tomorrow then throw the grids back in and watch the pressure. When there is a loss of flow in the returns clean the filter. Then overnight take them out and let the chlorine do it's thing.

As :kim: @kimkats :kim:suggested, put the grids back in tomorrow morning - and add the required amount of DE.
Be prepared for the pressure to increase pretty quickly when it's filtering out all the dead algae.

Well, here is the latest:
Postponed putting the grids back in Saturday. Tried doing the chlorine drop once more.
FC = 59 drops / CC = 5-6. I don't have that much FC in pool. The quick test shows a strong yellow. I can remember in past years many times showing orange; that's with a 3 gal shock.
Put grids back in Sunday. Increase DE back to my bucket measurement of 7.5 from 6 last time; mix w/water again (Only 2nd time done this way). Tank pressure @9lb. W/sweep = 11lb. Running pump @2600 ; sweep running well. 2-3 hours later, checked pump and sweep. Filter up to about 16 or 17 lbs. Sweep has dropped to zero.
Same as happened weeks ago... Low water pressure on pool outlet. Turned off sweep = a bit better. Ran pump most of the time. Eventually pressure up to 24lb. (I C more blue in deep end; not so much shallow.)
OK. Lots of dead algae in pool = the why. (Pool problems similar to when I 1st started TFP w/questions.)
Next day, Monday. Pulled out grids. See my pics, July 28, #57. Seems they're worse. Thin coating of DE on half or more of the grids, and not that much on the rest. 1/16 or 1/8". If I remember correctly, it seems that I should have like 1/4 inch or more (I'll google for normal pics)....
Monday pm put everything back together. 7.5 DE powder, small trowel at a time into skimmer w/good water .swirl. Turned on same as yesterday. Checked couple hours later. Again, tank pressure up/flow down.
Tuesday. Tired of cleaning filter n' ran out of DE. Running pump off and on.
Have noticed that if I turn pump off for awhile, then turn it back on, some water flow for ? minutes.
(Pool no longer green. Whats the solution <G> .
I took pics of pool today, when shaded. (May have been better w/full sun.)
