But I did just drag the net and pulled up a ton of leaves and brown stuff. My 13 year old son lied when he said he already cleaned it so now he is out there scooping up tons of leaves from the bottom.

But that has me worried to, the water is turning brown and my filter just went into the red on the gauge. Is it ok to swap the filter or no because of the cya added yesterday?

I was reading through this post and was going to post that the pool just looks dirty. Think its time to dig in and clean the pool! Know anyone with a small filter you can rig just to clean the pool with?
I have one of those intex 1500gph cartridge filter that I rig up to clean my pool when we get back from vacation as I always get a algae bloom and lots of crud on the bottom. Helps clean it right up and trhe secondary filtering ups the amount of water filtered...granted im running a small 6k gallon UG pool.
 
Chlorine works by breaking links in the cell wall structure of the algae cells. When enough cell wall components break the contents are spilled into the water and more chlorine is consumed to oxidize it all. This works great with normal infestations. Problem you have is there's so much mass of algae and muck that you have to add huge amounts of chlorine to oxidize it all. Plus no idea what else has been added. If you don't have any algaecide or other FC consuming material it will still take at least a week and tons of liquid bleach. Jimmy's refill will have you in business in one day. Just stick to TFP methods from then on and you won't have this mess ever again.

Clean it when its shallow enough to stand in it with a hose washing amd brushing the sides amd get all the crud off the bottom. Then start refilling off of as many hoses as you can run from multiple sources. 12k will fill in less than 24hrs

The pool will be clean but to cold to swim. Anyone use a sludge pump into a trash can filled with fiber in it and a drain hole in the bottom to drain back into the pool? I would just get the crud out brush it non stop and do the slam, there is nothing wrong with that nice warm water :) its healthy that is what water does with nothing to stop algae. look threw some of the posts on here you can see that it works. when the filter raises by 25% clean it. keep the fc up were it needs to be for your cya during this. if you have to add bleach add it a little high on the fc is better then a little low. its all gonna burn off anyway. and for the gallons go with the bigger number at least for now. Here was mine after opening and just now

Remember - it's NOT a SLAM unless you get your FC to Shock Level And Maintain it. At all times, adding FC several times a day, as well as at night and in the morning. Day after day. That's the Maintain part of the SLAM.
Your posted numbers show you were never in the middle of a SLAM if you were using 30 CYA with recommended FC SLAM levels.

I don't recall in your signature what type of filter you have. Sand, cartridge, DE. Please add it to your signature.

Also I'm not understanding why you won't shut off the pump, plug the lines and clean the filter. Your water and CYA lose is minimal doing this. If you need more, add more. What am I missing?

Commit yourself to do the SLAM and it will clear.

Hi all,

I added 3 pounds of stabilizer on Wednesday using the sock method. Over the last two days I've noticed high filter pressure (cart filter). Are these related? Right now when I put a clean filter in it starts out a the pressure it used to be at when it was dirty, around 25-30 PSI. Is there anything I can do to lower the pressure, it looks like the water is slowly entering the skimmers now.

I'm checking the FC like every 2 hours and adding what pool math tells me to add. It's a cart filter. We found a big area of leaves in the bottom that we worked on cleaning up but now the filter has been running at a high pressure and we have been changing the filter 6 times a day.

Elevated filter pressure invariably points to an algae issue.
You are not saving any test results to your Poolmath so if you could post them here we can start from there.

Good job checking the FC every 2 hours.

Am I reading that correctly that you are also having to clean your cartridges 6 times a day? I dont have a cartridge filter, but that seems like a lot. I've seen daily or every few days on a SLAM. Maybe someone with a cartridge filter can comment further, but can you tell us how you have been cleaning them?

I'm not very familiar with cartridge filters but I think the 25% pressure rise rule still applies. When the pressure rises 25% from clean pressure number, then clean it. No need to do it more often. @mknauss Is this right?

I just checked CYA, at 30, you can barley see the black dot, and only if your standing directly in the sun. It truly disappears around 23.

My FC was just at 11.5, I added a cup of 12.5%, last added some about 1.5 hours ago.

I wonder if I should add more stabilizer? I bought a 5 pound bag, added around 3 (we measured by having my kid stand on the bathroom scale while holding a bowl), so we should have around 2 pounds left.
 
I wouldnt, at least not until you are done with the SLAM. If you are measuring between 20 and 30, round up to 30 and use that as your SLAM number. After the SLAM, you can re-test CYA and add more stabilizer if you need.

When using Pool Math, it gives you the option of weight or measure. Use the measure number. ie. 3 cups, 1 qt 3 cups, that kind of thing.
As JJ_Tex indicated, don't add cya till after the SLAM. If you do it before, it forces you to use more chlorine to reach and maintain shock level.
