Identify what pipe/connection parts these are

Hi - happy to say this site has gotten me so far. Pool is running great. Kids are having a blast. I've done everything myself (wife helped pull the cover off and fold it)...

This past week, I tried to run my polaris vac on a timer (worked good for daily cleaning of acorns). Well, I took the vac out of the pool this weekend when the kids were in it and closed the aux return valve which goes from the vac pump to the pool, next day the timer kicked the aux pump on. Now I got a decent sized leak at this connection in the pic (the one coming from the top of the pump). To be honest this connection was weak to begin with... I noticed it a few weak again and just kind of got it to not leak, now it is shot... look easy to fix. When I push down on it, the water will spray out so i think it has some pressure seating that goes along with the water pressure flow.

One additional question... what damage will I do if that pool vac valve is closed and the pump does go on? Hey - I already forgot once... I could leave that valve open all the time (even if i am not going to run the vac for a few days), but then i feel like i reduce the main circulation at the far returns.

I meant to ask you why you close that valve? That valve is there for when you close the pool for the winter. Just leave it open when not using the cleaner and it becomes a secondary return with a low flow because it is running through the pump and small hose.
 
understood... thank you. I will leave it open. I don't open it that much anyway - because then the vacuum bot is too strong. Perfect. I will swap out the connections this weekend and be back in business.

I am not sure what you mean by the cleaner is too strong.

Your Universal Wall Fitting should have a blue or red disc in it as a restrictor plate.

yes, i think it has a blue disc... when i open the valve at the pump, all the way, i feel like the vac robot is sometimes floating too much. not stuck sucked to the floor. Ill be honest, I haven't done any investigation about the little guy yet, it was the previous owners and i attempted to use. it seems to be picking up the debris pretty good... not sure what the little screen in the hose line is and also I think there is a weak quick connection in that line as well.

What model is your Polaris?

Check the thrust jet adjustment (page 6 of the manual). You can adjust the head float. Check and replace the wear rings in the tail and make sure it has a tail scrubber.

Depending on its age its performance may be improved with a tune up. Rebuild kits are sold for them and all parts are available. You can rebuild one for 25% of the cost of a new one if you are handy. There are hoses and stuff internally that break and can affect the performance.
