I fired my pool guy…

How much was the pool service costing per week? Save that money up for a Salt Water Generator!!! I was just away for 10 days, came home to a TFP pool! Well, my pH was 8.0, but the FC was where it should be. And T.O.M. kept the bottom clean.
Stop working on your pool and get IN your pool and enjoy it!
Our pool service was $35/week plus extra for filter washing and other non-traditional chemicals... including phosphorus removing chemicals. I'm mad about that because as I learn more, I see they were charging me for stuff that didn't matter. Grrrrrrrr...

We're in the pool all the time. So, we're working on and playing in it.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Now you understand my username. Viscerally.

This is the general procedure recommended before your real kit arrives. Download poolmath and fill in all the info of your pool. Then per app add 5ppm chlorine daily in liquid form to the pool. When the kit arrives do a full run of tests and post them here for your personal guidance to kick in
Well, my optimism was tempered by reality today. My test kit showed up and I found out that the test strips I was using were awfully incorrect. So, I tested (PoolMath Logs) and I'm on a journey to make some adjustments. It's time to replace some water and start rebalancing everything. It looks like I should start with draining about 3,500 gallons and refilling it with fresh water. That'll get my hardness under control and reduce my CYA.

I sure hope the neighbors don't freak out when they see a long hose dumping water down the gutter for a while. Maybe I can do it in the dark of night and nobody will know :)

If you’re going to drain (exchange water) a 50% exchange would get u to about 45- 50 cya range which is as high as you might wanna be for a SLAM Process. It can be done with higher cya but it does require alot of liquid gold.

I’m well on my way. The water replacement exercise went well. I still have a little to much free chlorine and CYA, but I’m close to target. Thanks everyone.
I’d say don’t consider FC to ever be “high”
If it’s still under SLAM level for your CYA. Gets a lot of people in trouble trying to run on the lower end or minimum because of some perceived risk to chlorine being “high.”

Not saying you’re doing that - but wanted to mention it. My FC can be 10-12 and my 3 year old is eyes open, no goggles like a little fish.

I keep my CYA in the 60-80 ppm region. And my FC is in the higher end of the region.
