Hurry up and wait! (Katy, TX)

We had pool school this morning just as a storm front came through. So that was fun. Since the Intellicenter isn't installed yet, he went through everything else, but we will have a part 2 at some point after everything is done. It's also not clear who is responsible for the chemistry now either. Pool school is supposed to be the official handoff but he recommended calling the office on Monday to see what the plans are since he wasn't sure.

Since you do not have automation hooked up yet, did he set programs for your VS pump to run? That rain today added about 2 inches to my pool water. Therefore I added extra LC. Did he test the water before or after pool school?

As far as I can tell they've only set up one program when they first started things up a couple weeks ago and told us to keep the pump running. Nothing else since. Maybe they are waiting on the automation? No idea what the plan is. He tested the water in the latter half of pool school. Chlorine looked ok, pH was high so he told us to add some acid which we did after the rain stopped yesterday.

You have the IntelliFlo VS pump which has 4 speeds that you can program for different times. It is quite easy to do. You can download the manual if the PB did not leave it with you. Hopefully the PB did not set it on the highest speed to run 24/7. You should be able to look at the pump display screen to see what speed.

It's too cold to go outside to check right now, but I think it is at 2700 RPM (or thereabouts). What should I change it too then? They did not leave the manual, so I'll need to go download it.

Here is link to the manual. Just verify it matches to your actual unit.
It comes with some preset speeds on the 4 buttons. You can program each for a time slot as well as change the speed.
Here are some suggestions if you are running 24 hrs
6am to 10am - 2500 rpm
10am to 4pm - 2000 rpm
4pm to 2am - 1700 rpm
2am to 6am - 2200 rpm

I kept majority of time above 2000rpm because you have a new pool and still may be filtering out plaster dust. This runs the higher speeds for skimming and low just to keep circulating. You can change it around if you wish to have higher speeds at night if your electricity plan gives you lower costs in evening.

The manual is straight forward to make the changes. Just remember to SAVE after each time you change the program for a specific button.

Wow your project is flying compared to mine…
9/9 dig
10/6 gunite
10/21 an urgent meeting called to choose tile
11/30 tile installed
12/7 an urgent meeting called to finalize patio, at which the coordinator forgot to bring the book to help choose concrete color. Patio to be formed and poured “real soon”
12/20 nothing happening. At all. No schedule.

Yeah, one thing that seems to be constant is the wide range of what is "normal" on a pool build, especially these days when it seems everyone is installing a pool!

IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!!

What should be on the to-do list for the next couple days in prep for the potential freezing weather this weekend?
The main pool pump runs all the time, so that should be fine for continue as-is.
What about the other two pumps...turn them on when the front starts coming in?
Probably should activate the heater bypass too?
If the power goes out, flip the breakers and open the pump drain valves?
What else am I missing?

Heater bypass but don't forget to drain heater core. Also don't forget to run the secondary pump when the temps threaten.

The latest weather I saw for Katy was temperature right at freezing in the early morning but windy.
I would run the pump 24/7 or the freeze protection will kick in if you have pump set for less than 24 hrs.
Hopefully we do not lose power for this light freeze. But be prepared by knowing where your 2 drain valves are for each pump and the drain for the heater and filter.
I put a tarp over mine to keep wind off and retain heat from the pump running. See picture. This worked for me last February for the hard freeze.

Holidays are over and we're chugging right along.

  1. Brick veneer on porch column - BRICKS INSTALLED JAN 04
  2. Intellicenter panel remote set-up JAN 05
  3. Sheer descent start-up JAN 05
  4. Autofill installation
  5. Secondary and tertiary pump start-up JAN 05
  6. Equipment pad divot fix/refill
  7. Flush mount bubbler fittings
  8. Eyeball returns
  9. Make sure umbrella sleeves open
The mortar for the new bricks doesn't match AT ALL to the existing mortar - it's way too dark. I'm not expecting a perfect match but something in the neighborhood would've been nice. I can't decide how annoyed I want to be about it. Any sort of fix will probably make it look worse. UGH!!

Herbie got his first run of the pool today. He likes to get caught up on one of the main drains. There are two, but only one is a problem apparently. He gets himself unstuck after 30 seconds or so.

Chemistry wise, things seam to be holding ok, pH rises predictably, TA is steadily decreasing with each week, dosing chlorine as needed. Calcium is good. The CYA test drives me bonkers. Salt will be added next week, which is exciting.

Oh and 4 foot sheer descents are amazingly loud!! Don't know how much we'll be able to use it before everyone gets hoarse from yelling over it :D.

Onward....

Well, I think we're at the final update on this thread. The punch list items have been completed and the final check has been cut. The water softener was put back in last Tuesday (1/25) and the gutters added to the extension on Monday (1/31). Overall I give the PB a B-.

Now we wait for some decent weather so we can jump in! I'm really liking the Caribbean Wet Edge color. We will need to wait for the summer months to actually get a sunny picture but the glimpses in early morning and evening are lovely!

Keep it going !! IMHO the first year or two of ownership is really part of the build. We got this patio set and that landscaping and had XYZ issues arise unexpectedly. Most folks reading your build thread down the road will benefit from your tales of how it went after the build.
