I came to the forum to ask about water that seeps through the winter cover which becomes a PIA to drain in spring - usually taking a third of the pool volume with it which results in needing to add high TA well water and me fighting pH for half the summer. First thread I saw was NO cover over the winter. I also use a leaf net - pool probably will freeze for the season sometime in December. Ice won't clear until late April usually. If i keep the leaf net on to catch the errant leaves that blow around until we get snow cover (possibly emptying once the oak tree is bare), adding some liquid chlorine here and there while water is fluid, am I likely to have a clean (ish) pool in May? Last year when i took the cover off, the water was crystal clear, almost no work.

Oh - we do have pine trees about 50 feet up wind of the pool, hence leaving leaf net on.

I have a mesh safety cover I used two years ago and opened to a clear pool, but I opened in March. So I think you got a good shot at it.

I'd give the yard a good clean up once nature is done shedding. Test/add FC as necessary until it freezes and start up again once it's fully thawed. Those doses will be lasting a week soon, and then it will go weeks.

*you still need to blow the plumbing just in case the obvious isn't so. :)

So this idea went over like a lead balloon with husband. He reminded me of all the sludge we take of the cover in May. I could not dispute that (we're rural, lots of dust as well as the pines to the west, the hickories and poplar to the south and east not to mention the forsythia and other shrubs I've planted everywhere. Plumbing is all blown out and plugged. The one year old cover is on but it was only an 8 year thin one so I think I'll just replace it with one with higher scrim and thicker coatings. Any recommendations on a good brand? Thinking robelle, I've had good luck with their water bags. The swimline 8 year i have now is...less than desireable.
