Hi all - i keep seeing references to pre-mixing your de powder with water and then dumping that in the skimmer basket as opposed to dumping the powder in by itself. Does anyone have a good water to de ratio for this mix? I see things like “make a slurry” or it should have “the consistency of oatmeal” but those are all subjective. Thanks!

Put all the DE you are going to use into a 5 gallon bucket.
Fill the bucket up with water until about 2 inches from the top.
Stir it up and slowly pour it into the skimmer with the pump running.
The thicker stuff will stay in the bucket.
Add more water and stir again, as necessary.

Why does DE need to be premixed?
I use 6 lb bags of DE and add 5 lbs after a backwash.
I pour about 1/3 into one skimmer. Move to the other skimmer and pour another 1/3 in. Come back to the first skimmer and most of the DE will be gone and pour the remaining amount in. Then I take my hose and squirt fresh water in and around each skimmer to cleanup any DE and get it into the skimmers.
Breathing DE is carcinogenic and I want to handle it as little as necessary. I handle DE as carefully as MA.
