It only needs a very light coating all the way around the oring. By the book its every time you take it apart, in reality you only need to add more when there isn't enough squished to the side to grab with your clean finger and relubricate the center.
I have done mine once in the 6 or so times I have removed it since the pool was built in October. Hair nets in the skimmer make having to get into the pump basket a rare event.
