My ta is about 140 right now in my salt pool. Im having to add a quart of 20 baume to my pool every 3 days to drop it from 7.9-8 back to 7.5-7.6. Is this normal? Should i be dropping it more to about 7.2 so it has more room to rise instead?

Thats about right with a TA of 140.

Dropping the pH lower just has it rise faster. The rate of rise is not linear with how low it is. Best you can do is drop it down to 7.6-7.8. Running your ph at 7.8 is fine. Let the pH rise to 8.2.

What is the pH and TA of your fill water?

You may want to make an effort at lowering your TA. But it may be futile if your fill has high TA.

I concur with @ajw22.

My current TA is 170, although I am adding a little over a quart (5 cups) about every three days to drop from 7.8 to 7.5. My fill water is 250 and my pool is only about 5 weeks old, so in the 5 weeks my TA has dropped that much. Over time, the rate of rise will slow down as the TA naturally falls.

My TA is only 90, but my pH stays remarkably stable, I maybe have to adjust it once per season. Even after a day of splashing kids (moving it up) or the early season addition of CYA (moving it down) it seems to usually revert to around 7.5-7.6.

TA 90 makes a big difference in pH stability.

Mine is vinyl igp fyi. When i filled last week it was 7.5 ph and 170ta. I was hoping it would slow as ta dropped cause i sure dont like handling the acid anymore than i have to. Thank you for the replies

You have to get your TA down lower to find pH stability. Maybe the 70 - 90 range.

I found my original water test results after the water truck fill. The TA was 260 and slowly went down over the season and following season. I only added acid the first season and I felt like I had to add it every 1 or 2 weeks. Have not had to adjust the PH since that first season. Now my TA is around 80

My ph is rock steady with a TA of 70.
Some pool owners with rising issues have had to go as low as TA of 50 to steady ph.

Just get closer to recommended TA and you likely won't need to use so much acid.

It took a lot of trial and error but I couldn’t get the ph to stabilize until my TA was at 60 and my CH was around 600. Even then my ph was around 7.8 and by stable I mean adding a pint of acid a week instead of every day. All pools are different and you just need to find the sweet spot.

This is very interesting, new pool end of last season, so my first season taking care of it and have been struggling with pH. My TA is 70, and I have to add about a quart of acid every few days. This is with the SWCG running at 60%. I wasn't sure if it was due to the SWCG, or the new surface, or? But sounds like maybe I should try lowering my TA some and see what that does.

New plaster will cause pH to rise for a while, like 12 months or so.
