Im learning as I go this year. That being said, I followed the instructions from a pool store and my CYA reached 80. I drained some water and refilled based on the advice here. Now, as I read further, my chlorine tabs and shock are increasing the CYA again. I don’t want to throw $200 worth of tabs out. But, my CYA is back up to 75. Do I drain again? Will it hurt anything to have my CYA this high if I manage other chemicals? I don’t think the water “sparkles” like it should. Would high CUA cause that? Thank you all!

Welcome to TFP!!!

The first question is, how are you testing your water (what test kit do you have)? If you don't have a recommended test kit, get one. Link-->Test Kits Compared

If you have one, please post a full set of test results.

With a CYA of 80 (we always round up to the next 10), I would suspend the use of pucks, and use liquid chlorine. Or, as you indicated you have $200 in tabs. I would replace 50% of the water to lower your CYA to 40 if you intend to continue the use of tabs. When your CYA gets to 70 again, drain 50% again to get to 40.

In either case, you need to maintain your FC based on your CYA...always keep your FC in range for your CYA. Link-->FC/CYA Levels

I just posted my levels as of this AM. I suspended the use of pucks but just added liquid chlorine to raise the free chlorine level.

I’d rather buy liquid chlorine than keep draining the pool! That being said, do I need to drain any to lower the CYA at this point?

Thank you so much!

Your CYA is 80, always round up to the next 10.

You don't need to drain more. But do this test tonight...let's rule out algae, even if you can't see it. Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

If you fail oclt, then I would get your CYA down to 60 and follow the SLAM process. Link-->SLAM Process

If you pass, leave the CYA alone, and follow this and keep your FC in range. Link-->FC/CYA Levels
