Australia
Hi
I am from Australia. I got a 35,000L fibreglass pool. As nice and friendly as my local pool shop is, I just spent a bucketload of cash on a bucketload of chemicals to get rid of algae.

I want to get the best unbiased information, and start managing my own pool.

Hi! I am guessing the bucketload of chemicals did not help?? Here at TFP we teach you how to care for your pool by testing it your self and getting what you need from your local grocery stores like here: Pool School - Recommended Pool Chemicals

Please read here to start learning about your pool's needs: Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry

You will see the number one thing you need is your own test kit. With you being on Australia you will need to get yours here: Total Pool Water Testing Kit, Fresh Water Clear Choice Labs

Let us know when you get your test kit in. We can go from there.

Hi
No they did help, the pool is nice and lovely. Its just every time I take my water to be tested I end up spending money on this or that. Its all been adding up. There must be a cheaper and easier way.

I'll get a recommended test kit ASAP, and update my signature with the pool & equipment specifications.

Awwwwwww so you have found out why we call them Pool $tores! LOL

Did you notice the link in my post to what we buy to take care of our pools? You will see how the pool store "renames" every day things as pool stuff.

Pool $tores are in it to make money.

TFP is in it to see your smile and clear pool!

While you are waiting for you test kit you can start looking around for your best place to get liquid chlorine or plain (unscented, not easy pour) bleach.

In a cool, dark place? They are "guaranteed" to last for one year but............they can still be good a while after that (don't ask me how old mine is LOL).

Give them a go.........it can't hurt anything really!

Welcome to TFP! Good to have you here :)

If the test kit has been in the shed, a lot of the reagents have probably gotten too hot, although not all the reagents are killed by heat.

If it was me, I'd order a full kit from ClearChoiceLabs and then do some cross-checks to see what is still usable from your K-2006 kit. You'll be learning what is compatible that CCL can supply, because it's quite expensive getting Taylor refills here. You'll use it all in a year or two anyway, so you won't be wasting anything. In the meantime, don't throw out any of the Taylor bottles cause some can be refilled with CCL reagents.

Compatibility chart is here: Test Kit Reagent Compatibility Chart Clear Choice Labs
and CCL is very helpful on the phone as well.

You'll find stabilizer in Coles or Woolies sometimes, but Bunnings and Pool & Spa Warehouse have been best for me. I mostly just buy hydrochloric acid ($15 to $16 per 5 litres or $52 for 20 litres) and a couple of 15 litre of jugs of chlorine per year (around $24 for the first one including deposit, then $13 for a swap refill). I haven't found cheap bleach like they have in the States. I spent $230 on chems last year.

Good decision, mate! Those pool $tores have nice people, but I think the chem companies lead them away with the pixies when it comes to pool chemistry.

How would you know if your test results are valid? Toss out those reagents and order fresh so you can test with some confidence. You say you found them "in the shed". Does it get hot in the shed? Nothing destroys reagents faster than heat.

Probably tough to find refills for K-2006.

Take a look at Clear Choice Labs kits. They are obtainable in Australia and they make a good kit.
