We received the first "correction notice" for our pool permit application. One of the build plan reviewers comments was "Pool walls with unbalanced fill greater than 2' require engineer design to resist lateral loads". Appreciate any assistance understanding what the reviewer is talking about? Thank you!

“Unbalanced backfill height.

Unbalanced backfill height is the difference in height between the exterior finish ground level and the lower of the top of the concrete footing that supports the foundation wall…”

Based on MY interpretation (assuming your pool is deeper than 2 ft under ground) your code enforcer requires your pool plans to be designed and sealed by a registered professional (structural) engineer in your state.

Thank you very much. Does this mean that every in ground pool (because all woukd be 2 feet underground) require an engineer seal (for my municipality according to the reviewer)?

Yes, that is my interpretation of the reviewer comment.

I’m surprised that your PB isn’t handling all of the permitting for you. I’ve heard getting pool permits in Alpharetta can be a challenge. We are in Cobb where it’s a little easier but I’m glad we didn’t have to do it ourselves since we had many challenges including a flood zone, impervious buffer next to a creek, and an easement next to a stormwater detention area. Good luck with everything!
