So my partner and I are retiling the waterline of our pool. As we chipped out the tile and grounded the thinset. It seems the “mortar bed/concrete” is in really good shape. Would we be able to acid wash it and then tile over it with thinset ? I have read online that a mortar bed is needed but it looks like the concrete underneath is still in great shape.
Help Needed, Re tiling a pool.

I have never seen pool tile installed with a mortar bed. Just thinset like you'd do any tile job. Is there a mortar bed now? Or are you ground down to the pool shell?
All the videos I’ve seen , say a mud base is needed before installing tiling. For example swimming pool Steve, wrote a blog about installing tile. His steps include acid washing, adding a bonding slurry, mud base, then thinset.
Again, I am confused as to needing a mud base. the shell or concrete that is exposed is in good condition. I can post images here.

I am looking at my build pics and there may be a mortar bed on there. Not sure if it is a separate mortar bed or just the thinset.
The thinset can go directly onto the sanded concrete and the tile directly onto the thinset

so from what you see on the images I sent over, the thinset should have no problem sticking to the old concrete? I can trowel the Lacriete thinset over?
