Most common depth is 8” that can be adjusted 2” in either direction. It all depends on what you want the shelf to do for you. Lounges or chairs to be used on the shelf? With 8” of water you will still float over the top on a blow up.
I put mine at the second step down. That makes it about 15 inches under the water level. Put a standard lounger in it, and it comes just about to the seating level. We like it. Little kids find it deep enough to play on until they can swim. It’s about 7’ x 7”. Two loungers just fit. It could have been just a bit larger, but I’m not sure I would give up pool area to enlarge it.
