I started noticing DE settling at the bottom of
the pool after the filter pump starts running.

I have a separate pump for water falls (left one)
and when I turn that on with the filter pump off
the filter pump gets full of DE and then the
waterfall pump gets full of DE and then the
pool gets full of DE but if I also turn the filter
pump then both pumps get clear (no more DE leaking?)

The following has been replaced but problem persists.
Filter grids, filter breather tube, filter elbow o-ring and
multiport valve spider gasket.

I have no idea how the waterfall pump is plumbed
as I bought the house recently and this is my first pool.

Two things to mention... the multiport valve
handle has about an inch and a half to two
inches of play (see pics) and the filter inlet
diffuser (although not as bad as the valve handle)
also has some play.

If the handle play is not normal I'm gonna replace
the whole valve but if the inlet diffuser is supposed
to be rock solid, do I need to replace the whole
filter unit or can the inlet pipe be repaired?

Lastly, are the inlet/outlet pipes of the valve
soldered or threaded?

Thanks in advance!

Looks like the spring that is supposed to be in the MPV has broken. From the angle in the picture, it appears that the pipes into and out of the valve are threaded connections, not glued. The connections to the filter from the valve are a part of the valve. You can open the MPV by removing the nuts and bolts that hold the top on. Don't lose any. Don't use power tools to remove or replace.
