Starting the swim season and I want to start it off right. I want to use the Suggested Free Chlorine as my guide. I was playing around with the various chlorine & CYA levels in the Pool Calculator to better understand it. With zero CYA, SUG min = 0, Target = 3. CYA 30, SUG min = 2, Target = 6. As CYA is increased, SUG recommendations go up. I know I know this is wrong, but this seems to say the best CYA is zero. After having high CYA years ago we had to drain the pool - that is when I dropped Leslie's and found TFP. Since then I try to keep CYA between 30-40. We living outside of Dallas so the water temp is already 80 (and we have lots of shade so it would be even higher without it). I use bleach, and only tablets when we are occasionally out of town for more than a few days.

21,000 gal plaster, Jandy 460
FC = 5, CC = 0, TC = 5
CYA = 30
TA = 80
Calcium = 240
Borate = 0

I'm seeing a little algae and want to get rid of it and be ready to summer. What should I do and in what order. Should I raise borate level then slam? Or should it be the other way around? Or is there something else I'm missing. Thanks in advance for your help.

With 0 CYA, any chlorine you add will be burned off quickly. Maybe in only minutes in TX.

You'll probably need 50 CYA to buffer your FC once the UV is intense by you.

Read the SLAM Process. Print it out and read it 3 more times. Follow it to a T. Borates has nothing to do with any of it.

Ask away and we'll help fill in any other blanks. :)

Thanks - Just to make sure I understand it. If I get my CYA up to 50, the SUG min is 4, the target is 8, and the shock level is 16. Is the Target level what I should try to maintain? The min 4 definitely makes sense here in TX, but the 8 seems high. I guess I was burnt twice with high CYA levels and am overly conservative towards them. Thanks again.

For any CYA level you need to be free and clear of minimum FC at your next test/dose. Sometimes its not 24 hours and its 36 or 48.

But lets do a one day loss with 4 ppm mid season.

Minimum FC
+ 4ppm
+ 1 or 2 wiggle room FC
-------------------
= TFP clear.

4 ppm may last a week in the fall, but 6 hours in July. You adjust the daily target as necessary to achieve the never sniff minimum mission.
