hi all, new here. Installed a SWG this year, opened the pool, balanced the chemicals, dumped in salt, let it filter until next day, checked salt level-3600 or so, checked chemicals-chlorine between 3 and 5, FC-1, hardness was a little low almost 250, ph 7.2, al-80, cya 30-50, turned on SWG @50% 930 am this morning. Tested again at about 3 pm, almost 0 chlorine, and 0 FC. water is crystal clear and I did notice some bubbles on the surface of the deep end. I know I will need to turn the SWG up, but any idea on next steps to get the chlorine levels correct before I do that? Any help would be appreciated. Also, I have a Circupool Core 35.

Can you please find out your signature with your equipment, pool size and type, test kit, etc.? This will help us evaluate what's going on.
Now I feel pretty dumb, the 35 is probably too small for my pool, I should have purchased the 55, ugh. Don’t think I can return it either.

Have a look at the Chlorine / CYA chart, the SWG tab. The recommendation you'll see here is to run CYA much higher than you'd do with liquid chlorine: 70-90 with FC around 4. This saves the life of your generator. The FC can be so low because over time all the water passes through the cell where for a short time it's super-chlorinated.

Good luck with it!

What "standard test kit" are you using? How did you measure your CYA?
I’m using a few different store brand test strips (I can check brand when I go out to the pool) I know I need to get the Taylor kit but the strips are all I have right now. Should I shock to get the ch levels correct, make sure everything else is balanced, turn SWG on @100% after?

To raise cya, just use stabilizer? Or anything else that may be readily available?

Don't raise your stabilizer based on test strips or before you confirm that your pool holds chlorine overnight.

Get yourself a good test kit Test Kits Compared and then run an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test.

In the meantime, add 3ppm of Free Chlorine (FC) per day, either by adding the right amount of liquid chlorine (see PoolMath) or by running your SWG continuously at 50%.

Hey NJ,

With test strips, you're kinda playing Russian roulette with your pool and your $1,500 SWG. Delaying the purchase of a TFP recommended test kit will only lead to additional costs. Follow advice from @MITBeta. Don't dump anything else in the pool until you get accurate test results.

Best wishes!

Is the Taylor K-2006 sufficient? I can’t get one until June 1st, I caved and brought my water to the pool store. My alkalinity and stabilizer were almost 0 according to the store, but they also said my salt level was 0. He had to take a salt test strip to confirm what I already knew, it was about 3600. Before I go crazy with shocking the Crud out of it, I’m going to get the alkalinity and stabilizer right, and take it from there, sound correct?

Sorry NJ. We can't even begin to guess what you need to do with unreliable test data.

The pool store will fleece you for 2X the cost of the test kit, maybe even more, just this time. And all they will do is band aid it so you come back in 3 weeks with a 'new problem'.

Listen to the folks above that were in your shoes once and remember how awful it was. They are trying to steer you where they wish they went sooner. :)

I’m typically not a “pool store” guy, was just curious to see what their readings came back at. I’m ordering the kit online, just trying to figure out which one to get and how quickly. The K2006 on Amazon earliest is June 1st, I’m looking at the TF100 now.

I ordered the Taylor kit, it was faster, shipped this morning. Should I add in stabilizer now, then liquid chlorine? My cya according to pool store is close to 0.
