hi everyone,

I DO NOT WORK IN THE POOL INDUSTRY!

I look forward to being an upstanding member of the community! I also look forward to learning new things about pool maintenance.

It is my mission to inform people of the hidden dangers of swimming pool drain suction, after I accidentally sat on one and it trapped me underwater. I came very close to losing over 1/2 of my intestines. see attached for an image of the drain cover that could've killed me.

Sincerely,

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA), also known as the Pool & Spa Safety Act (P&SS Act), is a federal law in the United States designed to prevent drowning and entrapment hazards in public and semi-public swimming pools and spas. It mandates specific safety measures, including the use of drain covers that meet ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 standards (or a successor standard) and other anti-entrapment systems. The Act was enacted in 2007 and took effect in 2008.

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA) is a United States law named after Virginia Graeme Baker, who died after sustaining a pool suction-drain injury in June 2002, when the suction from a spa drain entrapped her under the water. It is incorporated as Title 14 of the U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA Title 14, Pub.L. 110-140). This act became enforceable law on December 19, 2008.

New pools are required to have 2 main drains or an unblockable drain or no main drain.

There are also other safety measures like Suction Limiting Vent Systems, Vacuum Breakers, Pumps that shut off when the pressure changes etc.
