I am a retired Environmental Health Specialist with the Arkansas Dept. of Health. One of my many duties, while serving in that position, was inspecting Public and Semi-Public pools in my assigned counties. I am CPO Certified and, though I had some initial training on hot tubs/spas, I never worked around any. Over the years I have helped several new pool operators get their facility's pool ready to pass their opening inspection for the season.

I have just set up a personal hot tub, and was telling myself this is going to be a piece of cake, but I'm finding that this 340 gal HOT tub is Much different to get dialed in than a large competition sized pool. I was reading the blogs last night, and found some very helpful pointers here. Thank you for this site!

Welcome to TFP :)

They are way different than you are used to.. I suspect TFP in a whole is way different than you are used to.. stick around as we always want new people and it helps you were in the business..

Look into running your hot tub as a salt water system/generator.. easiest thing I did :)

Hey John and Welcome !!! What I wish I could have grasped when I had my hot tub was that you are making people soup. Full of laundry detergents, shampoos, sweat, exfoliated skin, i can go on for an hour. *then* just as many nasties like bacteria, algae, pathogens, viruses etc

So yeah. You’ll need a bunch of chlorine if you’re using the tub. I kept thinking something was wrong that I needed doses all the time. I used it everyday for up to an hour. I needed lots of FC.

Get the ph and TA in check and dose chlorine appropriately with use.
