Hello from an excited Newbie in Bixby Oklahoma!!

Then I have to order tile which will take about 4 weeks to receive, so that probably means more delay.

I spoke with Brian at Light Streams today when I called to order my tile samples. I asked him about this (picture below) when I saw it on the website for installation and he told me that they absolutely recommend a 3 week (21day) cure time between gunite and plaster. That the tile not only shouldn't be submerged but really shouldn't get wet for 21 days. Anybody have thoughts about this? Did they tell you that also Denise? Talk about a potential delay. Especially when it takes 4 weeks just to receive the shipment.

No...He never mentioned it....but then he's the guy that doesn't seem good with numbers...or maybe it's listening.

I would like to hear from others on this.

I dont don't think it will be a problem for my PB to wait. He seems to be willing to do as I ask on timeframes.

Thank you for the heads up, TM!

I love the rectangular pool as well! Beautiful! The bench is perfect for relaxing and congregating outside of the hot tub. Everything looks perfect. So happy for you. Love the tile. You will be enjoying this "baby" soon!

Of course! It just struck me as odd since we've seen several builds with the light stream tiles and I'm pretty sure none waited. Lol

I dont know...I didn't pay attention to how far apart their posts were from tile to water.

I will see what Suz has to say.

Kim
Thanks! I'd be interested to know. My PB has just recently done one build with Lightstreams. I'm going to talk to him and the girl in the office about it.

Thank you Janny! I'm sure there will be hindsight revelations, but overall I'm confident we will be happy with it.

My PB said they wait 30
days after gunite before tile/coping for the gunite to cure, which he followed on my pool.

I misunderstood the question. Wouldn't be the first time! Ignore.

Forgot to update this yesterday....
Next will be stub plumbing on Monday. Nothing else scheduled for this week. Forecast looks like rain/thunderstorms for Tuesday and Wednesday so not sure if gunite will happen next week.
Hoping I get my Lightstreams samples today.

Hey guys! Kim asked me to chime in. As usual, I don't have a cut and dried answer.... Brian from LightStreams did tell me over and over to wait 21 days. By that point in the build, I didn't worry about it either way.

For most of the glass tile As Marla said -(man, you've got a great memory), I did have 21 days cure time due to weather and crew delays - not by planning. But there was some glass installed that didn't get the 21 days. I think the strip under the waterline tile didn't get it, but I'd have to check my build to be sure (who has time to do that? Not me!). The glass tiles on the steps, bench, and sunshelf had only ONE day cure time, with water added 2 days later. So far, so good, but that's not even one year from installation. And here in Cypress, TX we haven't had one freeze this year which might make a difference.

I will say this... Looking back on the build (finished July 24th, 2015), it's mostly a blur. The delays that made me eat too much ice cream, seem totally unimportant now. If I were to do this again, I wouldn't hesitate to wait even though I'm not convinced it's even necessary - just to be safe. Now, if I had a huge reason to push ahead to finish - like family coming to visit and they wouldn't be back for 3 years, then I wouldn't bat an eye at skipping the 21 day wait.

Glass tile update: I've noticed some of the glass tile on the spillway of the spa has cracks. Not all the pieces, but maybe 10-15%. So far they aren't looking like they're going to fall off (again, no freeze here this year). Time will tell. I've seen no cracks on any of the tile elsewhere in the pool. I'm wondering if the cracks are due to hot water from the spa spilling over very cold tile?? All the other glass tile on the pool is either always submerged or always out of the water. Actually, I don't mind the look of the cracks - kind of unique and pretty. I'll just have to wait and see about durability.

Here's a photo of the spa spillway:

Suz update: Santa came early with a brand new hip for me!!! I'm doing great and now standing about 3 inches taller - almost back to my old height! Yippee! I can't wait to take the new hip for a spin in the pool. It was a great relief when the surgeon told me I wouldn't have to go to the prosthetic hip store showroom and select the metal, color, or size! Can you imagine old Suz making THAT decision?!! (thanks in advance, Denise, for me doing a quick update here.)

Can't wait to catch up with TFP,
Suz

Thanks for popping back in for my build, Suz! You are welcome to update here anytime! I have missed you on here and am thrilled the hip is doing so well!!

The cracks in the glass concern me a bit...should I be concerned? The majority of the glass tile will be ordering will be for my spillway. No turning back now!

I'm sorry I posted that - I saw later you were using some for the spillway. Too late to edit.

I would talk to Brian about it. I probably won't know the outcome for some time - too late to help you.

I would use it again on a spillway. I love it that much!

My first time back in a while, and I create worries...

Ummgood, thanks! I'm so glad you're still hanging around. I looked at some of your pictures today, but didn't get to reading yet. I'm gathering my tax papers - such an easy thing to do, but still stresses me out. I think I have 6 months to a year to blame it on surgery. Anyway, I'm gonna use that as my excuse! Lol!!

I can't wait to see pictures of you and your family swimming!

Denise, you must be excited to making good progress now. And you'll have the entire swim season to enjoy your gorgeous pool!

Take care,
Suz

I AM SO GLAD YOU ARE BACK!! I was a bit sad that I was FINALLY making real progress and you weren't here to chime in with your thoughtful insights.

Ha! You DID NOT create any worry. I have enough for all 90,000 members of TFP! I discussed how to do the spillway with hubby and he decided he wanted it as a negative edge instead of a staggered stone waterfall. I told him there would be problems with either one and eventual repairs/replacement of tiles or stone regardless of what we chose.
I have constant anxiety and probably will for the entire build. I appreciate the honesty of your answers and would want nothing less than that.

Any my chance for a closeup pic on those cracks?

Blessings!
Denise

Thanks, Denise! I'm glad I didn't do too much damage!

If I understand the negative edge spa, wouldn't the tiles be under water most of the time? Is that like Appelbe's spa? There are others, but right now I can't think of them. Maybe with that type of spa, you will have less to worry about.

I will definitely try to get some pictures of the cracked ones - probably this weekend when we heat up the spa again. I can only see the cracks when I'm about 4 inches or less from the tiles, so I'll need to take the pics when I'm in the spa.

Suz
