Hello from an excited Newbie in Bixby Oklahoma!!

I find a 3' to 4' length of 1/4 inch pvc pipe to be very handy to get my water sample. Put your thumb over one end, put the other end in the pool, take your thumb off the end and then put it back. Then transfer your sample to a cup. Kinda cold to be sticking my arm in the pool and saves the knees. You can find the pvc already cut the right length at HD or lowes.

Nice! that sounds like a great idea! Thank you!

That's a neat idea. I use the syringe that Suz showed us. I like it because I CANT bend over and reach deep enough into the pool for a sample. But your idea is brilliant!!

When it's cold I use a piece of broom handle I cut down with a big alligator clip I've attached to dunk my sample bottle. The sample bottle is a condiment dispensor that I picked up at the dollar store. As a bonus the little spout on the top of the bottle, when inverted comes right to the 25ml line in the test cylinder. One dunk of the bottle gives me enough for all the tests, and enough to rinse all the cylinders before and after each test.

I love this! Such an inventive idea!!

I ordered my test kit and magnetic stirrers, should get them in a couple of days.
Permits are supposed to be submitted tomorrow, closing is Tuesday. Telephone company is coming out this week to see what they need to do to move their lines. Electric company engineer said they will move the underground power lines around the first week or so of January. Not sure when we will be scheduled for digging, hoping it's the week after the electric company comes and does their thing.

I have been using condiment bottles too and I love it! It makes it so easy to fill the water to the line I need in my test tubes. The only thing I wish I had now is more 'pills' for the speed stir. I have to get up between tests to rinse my pill.

Sounds like condiment/squirt bottles are the way to go, although I do like the syringe with the long tube as well. I'm sure I'll figure out what works best for me with some trial and error. Excited to get my kit and start playing with it.
How long do the reagents end up lasting? Just wondering how often you end up having to repurchase them.

So, I am feeling very anxious about my decision to include the fire/water bowls instead of doing the kitchen or the pergola. I'm dreaming/thinking about them in my sleep, waking up anxious. My concern is that they will end up being trouble. I love the look and the ambiance they provide but if they cause us expensive problems down the road, I will never hear the end of it. They really are not something we would add down the road, but the kitchen and pergola are which is why I went this direction. Hubby is hands off with the decisions (not by my choice) so the consequences will fall squarely on me.

Anyone have experience with these?

You can do both! Use the pipe trick to get the water out of the pool and release the water into the condiment bottle. I have the stuff to make the pipe thing but turns out my 12 year old makes a great water collector. Not sure if I'll need the pipe thing. Maybe when she is unwilling to do it. But then again my 6 year old is begging to do it but we won't let the younger two out by the pool by themselves so they have to wait.

I think the reagents last a year. I am testing a ton because mine will be expiring around May I think. I bought them WAY to early in the process and turns out my PB took about 4 times the average time to build a pool.

Yep, and its wearing on me. So long as I don't peek into the disgusting water and leaves accumulating in the shell, I am OK. We do have landscapers coming in this week to spruce up our gardens (remove leaves, mulch, etc) before winter sets in, that will be nice.

Re: sunshelf depths, after 6-9 inches, you can't have bubblers, so that may be a factor for you making a decision.

nini do you think you will put a lounger of some sort on it? If so would you want your body, bottom, feet, etc in the water, over the water, just touching the water, etc. Now measure to have it that deep.

If you think it will be used more for sitting and splashing on how deep would you want the water? Waist high, just covering the legs, chest high, etc?

Measure for that!

Just giving you some things to think about and letting you go from there.

I have seen them as low as 6" and deep as 16" so...................it all depends on YOUR needs!

Kim

Just saw that I never remarked on your input, ladies.
I guess I need to talk to the PB about the depth. I like the idea of putting chairs in and sitting. 6" would be good for the babies to play in but they are not always going to be little. I'm starting to rethink the value of the bubblers...

Also thinking about moving the spa to the patio area and placing the tanning shelf on the end where the spa is.
Any thoughts??

I just wanted to touch on the pretty (water/fire bowls) over the useful (kitchen/covering).

That is what it comes down to.................pretty that canNOT be done after the pool OR useful that CAN be done after the pool.

Bubblers----------there are attachments you can add to the returns to make "waterfalls or "rainbows". FUN and a pretty sound.

Do you want to think with your head or your heart??? BOTH are good ways to think on this.

Kim (I would get the water/fire bowls because I like bling/pretty/thinking with the heart)

Just spoke with my PB, I'm stickin' with the pretty bling bling, Kim!! He said he knows of no problems people have with them except the wind :) and reminded me that we have a 3 year warranty.

He said dig will probably be about the 3rd week of Jan provided the weather cooperates. If it gets to be below 36 degrees and stays there they can't do it because they want to dig, rebar, and shoot the gunite in rapid succession to preserve the integrity of the hole. I like that!

He also is not going to charge us extra to mortar our stone!! I am one happy (but still anxious) girl!

Here ya go, Kim!

I would leave the shelf where it is for the same reason as Marla. BUT I do like the idea of the spa being on the end where the fire pit and one day kitchen is. People can be sitting in the hot tub and talk to the people in those two areas.

I get that but if I worried about all the things that could go wrong down the road (so long as I'd done my homework), I'd be dead!

I don't think we have as much space in the firepit area as it looks. The firepit and length of pool aren't to scale. I think it would use up the majority of our sitting room on that side. I don't see anyone "sitting" on the deck on the opposite end, which is why I had him flip the spa over there- the idea was to make the most of our useable space and still have a decent amount of deck space. Maybe I'll talk to our PB and see if he can scale it for me. I'm visual- need to see it.

I've decided to just go with it and focus my thoughts (and anxiety) on material choices....and spa placement....

I went back and forth about where to put our spa. I am so so glad that's we decided to put it closer to the house. Since it has been cold I am so glad we don't have to walk very far to get in! We also plan on adding a fireplace in the future and we wanted it near the spa. I would switch it, but every person is different.

Here's the original design with the spa on the other side (for comparison). This was before my total redo of his drawing and without the additions of the pergola, kitchen and firepit, as well as the extra decking.
