Goofy question for the day...

When not using my heater, I plan on leaving it bypassed but concerned about water just sitting inside of it. I may even automate the bypass valve so that when heater is not active, it automatically is bypassed.

I know I could automate a drain valve, but I'm thinking an air vent into the heater manifold may be needed for it to drain. Small vent/check valve on a T fitting where pressure switch is (top of manifold)

I think you are over designing things.

What do you think the water sitting in the heater will do?

It will do nothing bad. And when it flows into your pool it will be a drop in the ocean.

You should run your heater once a week for best life. It reduces corrosion and keeps spiders and rodents from nesting in an idle box.

Yea I don’t know about draining it, I would be scared of the Copper oxidizing. But bypassing isn’t a bad idea, I don’t know the benefits except water restriction maybe. The new Jandy Jxis have an automatic bypass built into the manifold.
