Hi, I’m new to the forum. I have a hayward vs pump a year old, and would like some suggestions on setting the pump speed. In ground pool 20,000 gal. Two skimmers, inside basement pool equipment. I Have been running the pump 24/7 because that’s what the previous owners did. I have a Polaris 360 which lives in the pool, and need the speed to be 3000 to run it around. Seems like with this new pump I can reduce speed and time. Pools in Washington DC
Just opened it yesterday. Also having a problem with air getting in the filter. Suggestions?

Welcome to TFP! You are correct, no need to run that VSP at max rpms. Here are some tips:
- Run at higher rpm only when you need to power the cleaner.
- If you use a salt water generator, then you only need enough speed to activate the flow switch.
- Run the pump as low as you can (i.e. 1,200 or so) just to provide skimming action to keep the water's surface clean.
- Pump on low is fine when you are adding chemicals unless you just want extra circulation.

So basically, lower is better unless you really have a need to run faster. Hope that helps.

Thanks ! How many hours should I run it? Assuming a low setting and a higher setting, do you not run it during the night? Pool is in ground 17000 gallon, plaster, no salt, but typically use shock to chlorinated. Maybe 2000 for low setting and 2900 to push the Polaris 360 around? In Washington DC

Most of us with vsp run low 24/7

Totally up to you based on your needs above. VPSs are quite efficient, so even if you elected to leave it running 24.7 on low you could. My pump is on low 24/7, but I live in an area with lots of dust and debris in the country. The link below may give you more to consider.

Your base rpm would be that needed to effectively skim the surface. The pump run time will be that which keeps the surface effectively skimmed. Add the chemicals (liquid chlorine each day) while the pump is running.
