My pump died last night. Made a horrific winding sound and I turned it off. Haven't turned it back on yet. Looking at replacing it. I can't seem to find one that matches my specs. It appears this one is out of Canada. I can't find a 1.5hp one listed on the Hayward site. Only a 1.1 total HP's. Any advice is appreciated. Contemplating a VS but no to seriously.

Was this sound something that was progressively got worse or was it sudden. If the wet end is in good condition you may want to replace just the motor end and while you're at it the shaft seal too.

My practice has been to turn it on in April when I open and turn it off in October when I close. I have had the pump since September of 2017. Occasionally, it will start to sound out of balance with a louder than normal running noise like a wobbling. Last night I turned off the deck jets and walked away. I sat on the patio and a horrific squeal started. I ran over and turned the pump off. Haven't turned it back on yet. The wet end is in great shape. I am not much of a DIY'er. Whenever I start a project I say "this shouldn't take to long." Then I wind up calling someone to fix what I screwed up. Haaaaa.

You may want to check out INYOPools.com I did, and replaced / swapped out a 2 HP Hayward Super pump 2 with a 2.7 VS motor and never look back, the VS is a money saver on the power consumption. INYO POOLS with also provide the correct seal/gaskets and GOKIT you will need for a DIY job.

jb99, maybe better to go online and you can send the same photos to them that you posted to insure the correct replacement motor identification.

Pete,

Just got offline with Inyo. I am going to go with this pump https://www.inyopools.com/Products/00200017001332.htm#parts. I will hope my best DIY days are ahead. they have some great videos with step by step directions. Here we go...."it seems pretty easy."

hope your electrical rates are low going forward. You will be spending a lot more on that noisy single speed than a quiet VS.

Do realize that motor is no longer legal to manufacture for the US market as of July 2021. So this is old stock. Once gone, no more. Must be variable speed motors.
Yup. I get it. I am going to buy this one and rebuild the old one. I THINK!! I want to get the pool up and running ASAP. $280 for the pump and gasket kit seems reasonable. I'll hope it lasts a few years. Then I will learn on the old one and possible rebuild it as a winter project!! The concern I have with a VS is how it will act with my SWG. I don't want to lose the function on that control panel. I don't know why I feel this way.

As others are stating go with a VS instead of a SS. In addition to substantial cost savings over the life of the pump it'll also be a lot quieter running at lower speeds. Below is a motor replacement video which will give you an idea of the work involved. Can you elaborate on your SWG concerns w/ a VS pump?

Its not really a concern. Its more of just a way of doing things. If I replace with a variable speed pump I will lose the on/off control at the Pool Pilot. I guess that is not a huge deal as the pump has its own controller. Then I wonder about the proper speeds in order to maintain good chlorine generation. So I guess, in the end its just the not knowing that gets me. I know what I have now and how to use it so its simple just to replace with what I have. I guess I will look into the VS a bit more. I appreciate any and all tips and tricks with VS. THANK YOU ALL!!!!

You should be able to use the Pool Pilot, see post below. As long as the pump speed is high enough for the flow switch in the SWG you're good to go.
