Good day

First post here, but have been reading the site for the past few months and it's been very informative.

I have an in-ground salt water system pool with a vinyl liner. I believe a little over 20k gallons.

Hayward S200 filter, Hayward Super Pump 700, and AquaRite Electronic Chlorine Generator.

Over the winter after a deep freeze, my filter housing cracked. Expensive lesson learned about failing to winterize and drain the lines.

I know this model is old, what would be a good replacement?

I've read that keeping a sand filter but replacing sand with crushed glass is one of the best options, and less hassle than dealing with a DE filter. And we were happy with the sand results.

This model is side mounted, but I can modify to be top mounted if needed

Thanks for the help.

No need to use alternate media. Stick with pool filter sand.

The general recommendation is that if it works, you can stick with it. You may even be able to replace the filter housing and not replace the entire filter. Is the MPV ok? Doing this would save replumbing.

If you really want a new filter get a Pentair Clean and Clear PLUS 425 or 525 cartridge filter. Or a Waterway 420 or 520 cartridge filter. We recommend you get the largest that you can afford. With a large filter, you will only need to clean filters once a year.

If you really want a sand filter, same advice, get the largest you can afford, and will fit on your pad. I have the Pentair Sta-rite sand and it is a tank. Most of the name brand filters are of the same quality.

Stick with sand. If you are happy with the Hayward, try an S-244T2.

It's currently for sale for $599, should I just go with that or go with the 27 inch for $40 more?
The 27 holds 350 lbs of sand to the 24's 300. You'll need about 1/6 less cleanings with the larger filter. While that's not much, it adds up over the next generation that the filter lasts. Divide $40 by 25 years and it's laughable that you spent $1.60 a year for less cleanings. :)

Thanks to you and @PoolStored for the reply.

I assume it would be the S244T since my current model seems to have 1 1/2 inch piping.

For $40 I would always go larger. Those 27" tanks are so popular in my area my suppliers can't keep them in stock.
