Hayward HDF400 Universal Heater Issue

In reviewing the manual I see that the blinking bars during startup have a meaning.

The snorting you hear is during the gas valve open indication.

You need to check the gas pressures using a manometer.

Has this heater ever run successfully or is this a new installation?

You may have air in the gas line that needs to be purged.

What is the size of your house gas meter? Post pics of your gas meter data plates.

Post pics of the heater and your pool equipment.

I have read the manual also and following the codes at startup.

When I hear the “snorting” I can hear what sounds like it lights for a millisecond and tries about 5 times, but never throws a no light code.

Told it ran at the house it was removed from due to a pool change and no heater was needed. I believe the guy, since why would he drive 2 hours to install when he new we would test before I paid him.

I will look at purging the gas line.

Will need to get the gas meter data and pool equipment pics tomorrow.

This heater is replacing an old Hayward HDF400 that was at end of life.

Gas meter input reading at 9 with manometer. Within Hayward specs.

Thanks

The gas line is not plumbed correctly. Who did that?

It lacks a the sediment trap and the 90 degree turn in the gas path so that sediment will drop down and not enter the gas valve.

You may have clogged the gas valve depending on how long that gas line has not been used.

Pool guy who installed the heater (New gas line section). Older rusted pipe was from original owner of house we bought 8 years ago.

I can redo the gas line and add the sediment trap.

It’s about a 2 to 2 1/2’ run from the gas shutoff to the heater. I will eliminate that 90deg by the heater and see if that helps and hopefully the gas valve didn’t get clogged.

Pics from a YouTube vid that was posted in this thread.

Not much different gas lines except no sediment trap. Has 90deg in it.
I don’t generally rely on YouTube videos to learn correct methods.

I get the impression that pool guy who sold you and installed the heater is a hack.

Yep and checked my line voltage which is 120V.

It’s like a gift that keeps giving, more fun to continue.
Check if the 240V plug or the 120V plug is in the heater. The heater comes set for 240V.
