When was this installed?

When did it begin to malfunction?

The display does not seem to be showing normal codes; maybe the display is missing segments?

Can you show the display on power up?

In reviewing the manual I see that the blinking bars during startup have a meaning.

The snorting you hear is during the gas valve open indication.

You need to check the gas pressures using a manometer.

Has this heater ever run successfully or is this a new installation?

You may have air in the gas line that needs to be purged.

What is the size of your house gas meter? Post pics of your gas meter data plates.

Post pics of the heater and your pool equipment.

Sounds like an airflow issue.

The blower sounds like it is cutting in and out, but that is hard to tell from the sound quality.

Clean the burner assembly.

Check the gas pressure at the inlet.

Sorry for the late reply, unexpected out of town trip for work.

Full vid from start to finish.

I will answer each post and appreciate the help.

Just for background.

Had the old style HDF400 Hayward heater. Old heater had multiple manifold leaks, circuit board issues, display boards, etc. Heater was 10-12 years old. Finally wouldn’t light, so I was browsing for a used heater.

Found this one of Facebook and was in great condition. Seller came out to install (Pool Guy) and we have been troubleshooting the issues.

First code was A1 when testing after install. Installer went a bought a new air diff switch, no change. I did notice the A1 code goes away if testing with top cover on.

So this heater has never successfully fired at your pool?

Sounds like air needs to be purged from the gas line.

Thanks, I am currently using that troubleshooting guide.

Seems to behave differently when in spa mode vs pool mode.

Now I get the PF code, no change in wiring, tested 120V input power. I will verify ground connections and even tried a new ICB with same results.

Hayward hdf400 burner removal and cleaning.

Inlet gas pressure was 9 and in specs with Hayward. Need to test output gas pressure and will also check and clean burner assembly. Slowly going through each component.
