Hayward H400 and PS automation configuration help

Hi,

I have a H400 heater that when the spa is turned on, the heater kicks on, but the temperature does not adjust from the remote, but from the heater itself.

I had been trying to do some research on this, and found some threads that stated the heater should be in BO mode - which mine was not. When I put it in BO mode, the heater does not come on at all.

I'm wondering if there is a fairly simple solution as to how the PS4 unit is configured that I could tinker with.

Anyone have any knowledge of how this 'should' be configured?

Thanks,

John

The PS4 manual has pretty detailed explanations on how to hook up and control heaters.

Hi,

I've read over the heater manual which is where I am getting the BO mode guidance. I've confirmed I have a 2 wire remote control connection on the heater.

If I take the heater OUT of BO mode, the heater is triggered ON by the PS unit, but seems the temperature controls are managed by the heater and not the remote.

The other odd thing that happened - the first time we used the spa, the timer elapsed and the spa shut off - we exited the spa and when I woke up the next morning, the heater was running (heater was NOT in BO mode at this time). It must have been kicked on when the pool timer kicked on.

Feels there is something up with the way it was programmed but I am cannot seem to find the settings around how to control this. Overall the PS seems simple, the heater only has a few options - Auto manual or off. but not sure why the temperature is not being controlled.

I'll look online for a PS 4 manual, as I do not appear to have a paper copy to refer to.

Thanks,
John

I am guessing you have the "hockey puck" style remote? If so, you have to set the temp in the PS4 software. Also get rid of the timer for the spa or you will be limited to your use. Just have it set with no timer and it will run till you turn it off on the remote. On the heater, you need to crank the temp to the highest setting, 104. Then your automation will determine the temp. Also yes, BO is what the heater has to be set to in order for the automation to control it.

I bet the last time you said it wouldn't turn on when you used the automation is that the temp set in the PS was lower than the existing water temp.

Not entirely sure, as we have the heater set to OFF in pool mode, which had me scratching my head.

We have the square touch screen remote - not the older hockey puck version. Kinda a pain to set the temp from the remote really...

I think the culprit is as you mentioned that the heater temp was NOT set at 104. I'll set it that high, put it in BO mode, and give it a try this evening.

I need to also check if the heater cool down is enabled, as I do not think it is - as when I turn the spa off, both the heater and the filter has been turning off.

The installer changed the spa timer from 4hr to :30 minutes and stated the timer served no purpose. I changed it back to 4 hours as the hot tub barely heats up to temp in that 30 minutes :)

Appreciate the response. I'll tinker and report back.

You should be able to just remove the timer all together.

Do all of our changes outside AT the control panel.

Hi,

Yeah, I have the app and the handheld and the response times to try and program are ridiculous. I did it all from the main panel.

I initially thought it was the temp being set lower on the heater itself as being the issue, but after turning it up to 104, I still couldn't get the heater to turn on IF it was in BO mode. If it was NOT in BO mode, it would turn on but the temp was controlled via the heater panel.

I must have read the H400 Operations and Installation pages 4 or 5 times before it hit me - when I've been putting it into BO mode, I've been leaving it in the off mode versus selecting the pool or spa mode from the heater control panel. Once I put it into Spa mode while in BO mode, the heater turned on and I was then able to control the temps from my remotes as I'd expect.

/Rant On
The frustrating bit about this whole thing was - it's a new pool, I've had the INSTALLER out and they said they fixed it, but it was not in BO mode... I've had the folks contracted to do the service to take a look at it, they said it all looked right - and I even called Hayward about it and the 'tech support' was through E-mail, which they then asked me to call, but they haven't answered the phone number they gave me in TWO weeks (I've literally called nearly every day and left multiple messages asking to call me back).
/Rant OFF

I'm glad it's all over (fingers crossed). Appreciate the help - sometimes it's just bouncing the issue off someone that gets you to wrap your head around it differently.
