Hayward H150 Heater - Clicking/Popping Sounds

Hey everyone, first post here, hoping for some help with a new issue.

The heater is 2 years old. I just got the pool opened and everything was working fine.

I started the heater, and it fired up as normal, ran all day without issue.

By later last evening, it was making a weird clicking/popping/banging noise. It starts about 40-60 seconds after the heater fires.

No issues igniting or starting. It does still produce heat, but I shut it down after hearing the noise.

I have checked all my lines, water flow is good and not restricted at all.

I've made a video of the sound also, not sure if that will work here?

The pool company who did my install told me to call a gas fitter. I would like to see if there's something I can fix first.

Thanks in advance!

Andrew

Welcome to TFP

The popping and banging in the heater is the water boiling in the heater because the water flow is too low.

If you have a VS pump then increase the pump speed.

Clean your filter. What was your clean filter PSI on opening and what is it now?

Your filter may be clogging from algae. Do a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test and if you fail then the SLAM Process

The pump is single speed. I believe it's a 1HP - the flow out the jet is very strong.

When you say clean the filter, do you mean my sand filter? or is there a filter in the heater that needs cleaning?

See post #6.

Test the thermal regulator. Put it in hot water and it should open at 120F.

Sorry I sent you on a wild goose chase. I got you confused with another heater problem that was a Pentair and you are Hayward.

Your bypass valve is on the end cap of the header that unscrews.

I still think you have a low water flow problem causing this but you say it is good.

If not the water flow then the heater needs to be opened and the heat exchanger examined for why the heat is not transferring to the water.

How can I test my flow?

I have strong flow at the jet and suction at the skimmer.

I did a long backwash and rinse.

What else can I do to confirm if it's a flow issue?

Do you have a check valve around your heater where you can install a Flowvis?

This is the check valve between the heater and chlorinator.

Post pics of your equipment pad.

That pic shows flex hose. Flex hose can collapse internally or kink and cause flow issues.

It would be interesting putting a FlowVis on that valve and seeing what flow rate is coming out of the heater.
