Hi All,

I recently purchased a hayward 150 fdp heater used. I hooked it up yesterday and it stays in standby mode. There are no error codes either. If I stop the water flow, the service light comes on along with a 0 on the screen. Once I start the water flow, the service light and 0 disappear. The gas valve is on and gas is flowing to the heater. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Welcome to TFP.

Does the blower start running?

Have you checked the gas pressures with a manometer?

Show us pictures of the heater as Hayward has various models called a H150.

Universal H-Series Diagnostics Guide provides detailed diagnostics for troubleshooting problems and error codes.

"Standby" just means that the heater is energized and waiting for you to select a "mode" by you using the right hand button to select either "pool" or "spa." It doesn't matter which you choose if you are heating only a single body of water, it just represents a temperature you have pre-set.
Basically, by pressing the mode button and with the water flowing you are turning the heater "on."
From the manual, page 39:
"KEYPAD INPUTS:
The control accepts user inputs via the keypad on the front panel. 1. When changing the mode from “STANDBY” to either “SPA” or “POOL” there may be up to a 10- second delay for the blower fan to begin running. The control performs an internal self-test and then verifies that the blower vacuum switch contacts are open before energizing the blower. 2. It is normal for the heater to display a 1- to 2-second delay in responding to any keypad input. 3. It is normal for the heater to display up to a 5-second delay when the keypad is used to reset the control to clear an error code. 4. The control will accept a mode change during lockout after 5 seconds. The control will continue to display the error code and remain in lockout until it is reset. At reset the control will go to the last saved mode."

If the keypad doesn't accept inputs, that may be why the heater was sold used. If so, open the control panel and be sure the ribbon cable from the touchpad is connected to the circuit board.
