My cold water is soft but my hot water is hard. I have flushed my water heater and drained it and filled it back up with cold soft water. I immediately tested it coming out of kitchen faucet and it tests hard again…about 50ppm of Hardness. I’m perplexed.

I have a water softener hooked up before the water heater.

I'm confused. Ideally the water supply line coming into the house from the street goes straight to the water softener so that all interior home water is softened before being split to the cold lines and water heater. You set up is different? Maybe post some pics?

My water softener is before everything except outside hose bibs.
:goodjob: How old is your water heater? Any chance the softener was between regen cycles when you filled-up the water heater? Maybe the cold water wasn't quite as soft as expected?

Here was a good discussion.

Test the CH of the water before it enters the softener - usually the hose bib near the outside water shutoff will have hard (unsoftened) water.

My unsoftened water has a CH of about 225-250 ppm. My softened water - cold and hot - is usually in the 0-50 ppm range.

Post some pics of your softener, water heater and the plumbing near each.
