Gunk...

I HEAR ya. I just got hosed $9.06 each at HD for four month old, sat outside all summer jugs. For me it's 2.9 FC per jug, when it's actually 10%, or $3.12 per FC.
I noticed Home Depot HdX 3 pack had February and some July dates on the boxes today. Grabbed a july one from there for 3 more at $24.98. Then bought out 3 local ace hardware stores ($7.99) for the last 5. Next delivery's Friday for those stores but at least they carry it inside

Not too bad. Based on that FC result, it appears you may be using Taylor's 25 ml sample size and multiplying by 0.2. It's very specific and requires a bit more powder. Instead you can do the following:

Use a 10 ML water sample with ONE generous scoop of powder. Mix and add drops until clear. Take that result and divide in half (0.5). Example: 24 drops equals an FC of 12. That method is accurate enough and may save you some reagent.
Question on the drops- I've watched a couple you tube videos today and one person did the "swirl" after every drop and caps it. This takes forever at 38-40 some odd drops.
Another one did 5 at a time and didn't swirl much after each drop nor did he cap it.
On Taylor test YouTube they did a few slowly. Swirled the tube a little. Added more. Once to say 15-20 they slowed down more for each drop.
Is there a proper or better way?
Edit- I noticed I'm getting higher numbers with less swirl and faster adding of drops. It took a minute and half for 48ish drops this past time and a FC of 24 with the last at 17-18 a few hours ago seems high

Yes, because the reaction is not being helped with the swirl. AND, with faster adding drops, the drops are smaller. You will get accurate numbers with more swirl and slower drops. Let the drops fall under their own weight.

Smart Stir is the BOMB!

Got a 20 following Taylors advice 100%. 😁
Follow that process for now.

All of the guides, mods and experts on TFP would tell you to get a speed stir or smart stir. A bit expensive, but it is the it is the nuts.

My brother, who owned a pool for 30 years came to visit. We did back to back FC test comparison, me with smart stir, him swirling. His results were 1ppm higher. Smart stir makes the mixing of chemicals consistent and the results repeatable and accurate.

I ordered and it will be here Thursday. I only wish I knew about it last weekend 😂

Too dark to look for brown algae. But I feel better this morning on day 4 of SLAM

Oh Man, you’re up before the roosters 🐓!
Looks good 👍🏻 keep going until no more accumulation occurs.
Tip* Clean your beaker with alcohol to eliminate the possibility of gunk causing false cc readings.
About the drops- 💧
try for 1 drop per second (this is about the rate they fall out on their own)
swirling the whole time. It makes it easier to keep count too! 😵‍💫

Beaker? Being the tip/nozzle of the 871 solution or the clear plastic round water tube.

So that's an OCLT pass. Closing time mean nature is shedding and its nearly impossible to not have some sort of environmental debris being added that appears identical to algae. We use the OCLT as our guide to differentiate them. One test could be a fluke so I'd always want to pass 2 consecutive tests, then I'd be ok that the alage is gone.

Run a couple ppm higher than your usual to ensure you don't even think about dancing the minimum line until you close.

Uh 2 out of three ain't bad, but it's not a pass.

Still have to see if there is visible algae. Many times clearing the pool is the last of the criteria to pass.

@Tnt17tnt ANY algae present keep slamming. For insurance I'd slam another day.

Yes I just brushed and the same nuisance brown patch is still there. It just won't go away. Should I keep at 20 or go to maybe 22? I know sometimes a vinyl liner can be subject to higher PPM possibly?
I can turn the pump off briefly and post a picture if that would help.
Then turn it back on and SLAM more. Still at 20-22

Stay at 20.

Do you have a vacuum? You might try vacuuming to get some of the dead stuff off the bottom.

Have you been backwashing? You should backwash when pressure rises 25% from clean pressure.

Adding some DE may help filter the pool. You must use POOL DE.

Yes I have added this recently but am not sure how great it is. POOL BLASTER Max Cordless Pool Vacuum for Deep Cleaning
I have not backwashed since last week- pressure has been 10-15.

Pool grade DE- that's added to the skimmer by the filter and pump correct? Not the skimmer at the top near the pool line?
