Greenish cloudy water

I would use 27500. It's a nice even number and likely makes up for the sloped walls. Either way you're close enough that it doesn't matter too much. Another thing to ponder is whether the depth is exactly 3' and 8'. :hammer:

I am running mid skimmer. But we are about to get rain here in NJ so it may be closer to top by tomorrow! I just did a FC test and got it to an 8; pool calc recommended 55 oz to a 10, but I did a full gallon and some left in another container (probably closer to 150 oz total) to see if I can push it to 10 for the first time. I'll test again in an hour and see if I hit 10. If it shoots past that I will assume the pool is running closer to the numbers I am utilizing and use that for all other calculations moving forward.

FINALLY! I got it to 10 (technically 11), so I'll slow down now. But I had to confirm it would hit 10 for my own sanity. Water is still slightly cloudy but much better than yesterday again. I will test again this evening and see what my level is and adjust to 10 if needed.

I guess you didnt understand my question is the 3 ft measurement to mid skimmer or to the very top of the pool?

Ah, mid skimmer then. The pool is usually filled to around that level.

Just tested my FC again and it dropped to a 5, 3 hours seems awfully fast for a non sunny late afternoon drop. I just added a gallon back to it to bump it up to a 10 again. Will be able to check it one more time tonight before it gets too dark :/

I just retested and still at a 5 - very disheartening :insertcryingsmileyhere: I added a gallon of bleach for good measure before bed, saw another puddle of algae at the bottom so it's doing it's job for sure, but I can't seem to maintain it. The one time I got it to the goal mark of 10 for the SLAM, I doubled and then some the suggested dosage of the bleach. Totally at a loss at this point?!?!?!

I'm just wondering... what bleach are you using? Could it possibly be some of last year's inventory that's been sitting out in the garden section?

Or did poolmath somehow shift to the default and use 10000 gallons as the pool size? Or is the stuff 8.25% bleach and it moved to 12.5%?

Richard - it's Clorox bleach from Target, so who knows?!?! I won't give up - it's become personal for sure. I did confirm that when the website pulls up, it auto populates my 27500 gallons, but now that you're saying that it I make the bleach percentage incorrect it looks to be in line with the numbers it's spit back to me this afternoon. I'll check the levels again in the morning and adjust to kick the day off as strong as possible.

I did want to do the CC test tonight, but got distracted (kids make chemistry difficult :) ) . I will do both in the morning and also gut check on the CYA. So close yet so far away!!!!

I just did the first test of the morning. It looks like my FC is down to a 2.5 and get this - I cant even get the CC test to complete. I've added 20 drops and still going, no difference in the shade of pink. I've done the CC test multiple times and keep getting that result.

How is that possible? Or what can I possibly be doing wrong with the test??? I add the 10 ml of water to test for the FC, add the 5 drops of the 003 solution and it goes to pink and then I start with the 0871 and keep going and going and going..

I did a CYA test for kicks and it's still registering virtually nothing. The test kit I have is the TF-100 - anything else in there I can test for that would be impacting these numbers? Talk about a roller coaster ride!

With minimal at best CYA in the water, should I be using the 10 shock level present in pool school for something with a CYA of 20 or a higher number? Through reading the older posts, it looks like the CC numbers can go up without sunlight, and it was cloudy yesterday and rained a bit last night. So I'm sure that's impacting the FC number, but not sure if it should have that much of an impact on the CC.

I had that problem about a month ago. I fixed that by putting the reagent bottle back in the test kit and pulling out the correct one! Boy, did I feel dumb!!! Not saying that's your problem.

Metsy10, I am also in NJ although new to the TFP system. From your picture I think your yard seems to have similar trees to my yard. I have noticed since opening my pool up that my CC's climb up to about .5-1 after heavy winds, and rain. I believe it has to do with the tree junk that falls into the pool.I passed the OCLT last week. Every day I have to clean the bottom of the pool, skimmers, and skim the junk off the surface. If I skip a day I also notice the jump in the CC's. Rain by itself mostly effects my PH your results could be similar or drastically different. Stick with what the experienced posters here are telling you'll have a clear pool soon.

Metsy, either your mistyped or it sounds like you're not doing the FAS-DPD test right.

FAS-DPD Chlorine Test
FC and CC - Free Chlorine and Combined Chlorine

  1. Rinse the sample tube with pool water.
  2. Fill the sample tube with pool water to the 10 ml mark. The top of the sample will be curved. This curve is called a meniscus. The bottom of the meniscus should be level with the 10 ml mark.
  3. Using the small spoon shaped end of the dipper, add one heaping dipper, or two level dippers, of R-0870 and swirl to mix. If the sample turns pink for a moment and then turns clear again, or if it turns brown, add another dipper of R-0870. If the sample remains clear the entire time, your FC level is probably zero, however it is best to verify that with an OTO chlorine test, since the FAS-DPD test is prone to the occasional false zero.
  4. Swirling constantly and counting the number of drops as you go, add R-0871 one drop at a time. Continue adding drops until the color changes to clear. The pink color may become extremely faint before it goes away. Make sure that the sample goes completely clear.
  5. Multiply the number of drops by 0.5 to get your FC level.
  6. Add 5 drops of R-0003 and swirl to mix. If the sample remains clear, your CC level is zero.
  7. If the sample turns pink again, add R-0871 one drop at a time, swirling constantly and counting the number of drops as you go. Continue adding drops until the color changes to clear. The pink color may become extremely faint before it goes away. Make sure that the sample goes completely clear.
  8. Multiply the number of drops by 0.5 to get your CC level.

Jesse - thanks, I actually didnt know there was a YouTube channel! I've subscribed and I had my husband do the test as well (to confirm it was not my operator error). His results were similar to mine. It has led me to a drastic decision - I had one more bottle of the liquid stabilizer and I bit the bullet and put it in. I know it's risky but I had to try it to confirm that I could get any CYA reading before I attempt SLAM again.

I'm off to buy more bleach and have one question - can I start SLAM at night? IE if I come back we confirm CYA presence and I add bleach to raise my FC levels will that work and do it's job overnight, or am I better to wait until the morning?

Thanks!
Lorraine
