Couple things… my alkalinity was perfect and is now all out of wack after adding pH up (now pH is now perfect). In hindsight, I probably should have left the alkalinity alone? Now what?

The pool started off like 3 inches below the skimmer line and was filled with well water (my house is on a well). Why is my CYA so high?! I never added any stabilizer. Pool is clear and blue. HELP!
 
pH up is likely soda ash/washing powder, it raises TA and pH. At the beginning of all of this, you should have raised TA by 10 to 60 with baking soda...then raised pH to 7.4 with 20 mule team borax. Then left it alone.

You really don't need anything to raise pH. Keep your pH in the 7s, it will tend to rise on its own.

When your pH gets to 8, lower it with muriatic acid to 7.6. Wait for it to rise again, lower again to 7.6. When TA gets to 80, stop lowering pH to 7.6, only lower to 7.8. pH should be stable around 7.8-8 with a ta of 80.

What were you using to chlorinate?

I would switch to liquid now, and always follow this...Link-->FC/CYA Levels

I always use liquid chlorine 10%.

What if my pH stays at like 7.4 and alkalinity at 120? How do I just lower the alkalinity? I plan to let it filter all day and retest tomorrow at some point.
 
Leave it alone. Any pH in the 7s is fine. pH will rise on its own with a TA of 120. When it gets to 8, lower it with muratic. That will also lower TA.

Just manage the pH in the 7s, TA will take care of itself.

CYA does not get into a pool unless you put it in. You either used a product with CYA, or you added CYA.

Alright sounds good.

And no, I didn’t add stabilizer or chlorine pucks—I just started working on it the other day. I should add that I have no idea how this pool was chlorinated last year or closed because I inherited it from my aunt that just passed away. When I opened it, it was blue and clear though. It’s very cloudy outside today and stormed yesterday so that’s why I wasn’t too sure on if the CYA was 80-100. It’s high, for sure though.

I had bought some muriatic acid, but the pH literally stayed the same 🤷‍♀️ so all I added was liquid chlorine. I have the jet pointed up so the pool is aerating currently. Maybe this pool’s alkalinity is fine to be at 110 if the pH is stable?

Suggestions? I know I need to drain and refill the pool to get the cya down, but is the pool safe to swim in as the current values stand? It’s blue and clear and honestly people swimming in it will just help aerate it more?
