Foreclosure With Neglected Pool, Please Help!

Hi, Aimee, from a neighbor just south of you in West Chester. remember it is easier to add more cya than to get rid of it if you add too much. after adding 4 lbs, you should be able to see some cloudiness in your test sample even if you still get a low reading. it should not be clear anymore. if it is, something isn't right.

Thanks for the advice all! Unfortunately I was out for a little of the day. When I returned late in the afternoon I tested the fc and it measured 0. I added more bleach to bring it up to fc 12 and began squeezing the sock out in front of a water jet. We decided to put another white sock in and suspend them both I front of a jet.

So my questions, should I be adding the cya at a quicker rate? So far I haven't quite added 4 lb.

Also, is it possible my gallons are off from the pool math calculator? I tested the fc about 15-20 min after adding the bleach and I got an fc if 14.5 and my goal was 12. Just wondering if my math is off? If so I definitely don't want to add too much cya. I'm going to take the advice above and test the cya again after the first canister has been added.

Thanks again for all the help!

Not really. Just squeeze it a lot and it will all go away.

It's possible your pool is a different size that what you think. That is quite common. As long as your info in the Poolmath calculator is correct, it's fine. Don't forget to update the WEIGHT field on the FC row. By default I think it goes to 6%. Make sure your bleach is really 6% and not 8.25%. Other than that, your pool may be slightly smaller than you think. Over time you'll get it figured out. But for now, get all the stabilizer in the water so you know the CYA is at least 30, and maintain that FC of 12. That's very important. Have a nice weekend.

I've been able to maintain my fc a little better today, it fell to 10 at one point but I just tested again 3 hours after raising it to 12 and I'm at 11.5.

I do have a question about the cya. We've added a complete 4 lb canister at this point. I did a cya test this morning (not super sunny so don't know if that made a difference) and the test water was for sure cloudy this time but the dot never disappeared. I know it can take a few days to fully register. I'm concerned about adding too much especially if my pool doesn't hold as many gallons as I calculated. Should I wait a few days or go ahead and add what I originally calculated? If I don't add the full amount now will that slow down my process?

The pool looked worse this morning than it has over the past few days. The steps were less clear. I'm so worried about making a mistake!

If your pool is really 26,700 gallons, adding 4 Lbs of stabilizer (64 oz) should increase your CYA by 18. However, from your earlier posts where you say that your FC is actually higher than what you thought it would be, that tells me that your pool volume is less than you think. It's probably closer to 22,5k - 23k. At 22,500 gallons, 4 Lbs of stabilizer would put your CYA at 21. I would put another 2 Lbs in and check it tomorrow after it's dissolved. Also, keep up the good fight with the SLAM. Keep bringing FC back up to 12 and check it often. Every 3 hours would probably be fine. You don't want it to creep back down to 0 again. That probably set you back some. You have to get ahead of the algae to kill everything off, so stay vigilant with the FC.

It will help keep it in the pool longer to do its job. Otherwise, the sun will burn it off quickly. It only lasts about 2 hours in a clean pool with 0 stabilizer, so just imagine. Even if you overshoot cya a little, don't worry. You have plenty of room to increase it. I run mine here in San Jose, CA at CYA of 50 because of the hot sun. Otherwise, the sun would be burning it off too quickly for my liking. Perfectly fine to do this, as long as you realize you also have to increase your required FC as well to a little higher level.

That helps very much, thank you!

My brother in law has offered to let us use his automatic pool vacuum with it's own filter. We are planning on starting that as soon as we can get it from him, probably tomorrow. We have still been getting some with the leaf rake but less and less. I'm sure there is still quite a bit of debris that we are not seeing. Hopefully that will help this along as well!

Definitely, the more stuff at the bottom of the pool, the longer the SLAM will take. Ideally, you want all sludge and leaves out of there so the chlorine can get to work on the water. Good idea with the automatic pool vacuum. That should help a lot.

I feel like we are slowly but surely making progress. Here is a picture of the steps from Saturday and then today. It looks slightly clearer to me today.

We are continuing to brush daily and now have been running the robotic vacuum. There is definitely still some gunk on the bottom of the pool. No idea how much but I haven't been pulling a ton with the leaf rake.

I measured cya this morning, we've had a very bright sunny day here in southern Ohio. At 40 I could barely see the dot and at 30 it was gone completely. We finished up adding the cya Saturday morning.

FC has been maintained pretty well. The lowest I've measured since Friday evening has been 10. I went to the local pool store today and bought a test kit refill. I'm definitely going to run out of the drops for the fc test soon. The pool store guys acted like I was a crazy person for using a professional test kit, he didnt even know they sold the refills until I pointed them out to him. Lol, at least I know I can get them there.

Many thanks for all the help and advice! Hoping to have some encouraging progress soon.

Oh yeah, that's good progress. You'll have sparkling clear TFP water in no time. Just keep doing what you're doing and follow the excellent advice you've been given here. Good job!

It looks the best it's ever looked this morning. We are getting less and less each time we clean out the robot vacuum. The water is definitely clearer, I am starting to be able to make out the walls of the deep end and at least part way down. We're getting there!

I do have a question. I have to work tomorrow pretty much all day, I only usually work a full day on Thursdays. Should I put more bleach in tomorrow morning so that it doesn't deplete so quickly throughout the day? Or I could always have my teenage daughter pour some bleach in without testing a few times throughout the day. I've been able to mostly be home and keep a close eye on things but I would hate to have a major setback tomorrow after so much orogress.
