So I performed the SLAM on my pool over the last 2 days. To start, I just want to say my pool was not terrible but as one poster said, you cant be half pregnant. That convinced me to go ahead. Firstly I want to say that if you are going to do this make sure you not only have enough chlorine on hand but also enough of the testing chemicals. That said, here are some observations:
I started with a FC level of 4.5 and CYA of 48.
The Pool Math app says to SLAM to 19 FC. The table I have seen on this forum says 15. I chose to go with the Pool Math suggestion and applied the amount of 10% liquid chlorine suggested around 7 pm.
Well, testing about 1 hour after adding the chlorine, while pump running, I had a FC reading of 30!!!! So what went wrong here? I dont know. Kind of freaked me out a little because I was concerned that it would bleach my 12 year old liner a bit more than it already is.
A bit more than 3 hours later my FC was at 21.
Next morning pool already looked good so I brushed and checked at 7 am the FC at 19.5
Around noon FC at 16.5. Didnt add any chemicals because at this point it looked good and I was within the 15 FC range from the tables.
At 8 pm I was down to 13.5 FC. I probably could have stopped the SLAM because the pool looked good and the CC was under .5. Could I have started the OCLT just 24 hours later??? Wasnt sure, and I dont recall any forum saying a minimum dwell time so I chose to add another 1/2 gallon of chlorine and give it another day. Losing one more day in the pool is not a big deal.
Today, looks good and vac'd the pool. Should I backwash??? I didnt since filter media was only about a week old and pressure really didnt rise. Will do final reading around 7 pm and start OCLT.
Hopefully by tomorrow the FC has dissipated to normal level and can resume use.
Any suggestions or comments are helpful so next time I can be more certain of the steps. But looks to be a success anyway
