First time pool owner

Looks like the consensus is the motor is shot. You also mentioned smoke in a post, that almost has to be the winding. I would start shopping for a new one. check out the two speed pumps they can easily pay for the additional cost by reducing electricity usage.
 
I'm back, we got the motor apart. I can not find the capacitor? It looks nothing like videos i have watched.

I fully agree with everyone else. It's done for. Take it to a scrap yard though, they will give you a few dollars.
How's the water?
 
Time for a new motor - as suggested above try to find a 1HP 2 speed motor - that way you can run on low speed for much less $$$$ in electrical costs.

edit: Looks like a Hayward 1HP 2 speed motor SP15922S is $280 or so - Amazon and Home Depot have them listed online...

I am not sure how quickly you could save $100 in electricity - it depends on your electric rates, and the run time of your pump...
