Not exactly. The main problem with CYA being too high is that once it gets over 80-90, you need a much higher FC level to compensate as noted on the Pool School - Chlorine / CYA Chart. That CYA chart is EVERYTHING when it comes to balancing our water for proper sanitation. Too low of CYA and our FC gets burned-off by the sun too quickly. Too high and it simply becomes too difficult to manage, and if you ever need to SLAM again, it requires a lot of bleach. Once CYA gets too high, the only way to lower it is by partial water drain/exchange.

In our area, we can go with a CYA anywhere from 50-70 easily because it gets so hot. My pool is in full sun all day, so I keep my CYA at 60-70. It helps protect my valuable FC during the day, but I watch it closely to never let it drop below my FC target level on that chart.

Hope that helps clear it up for you.

That does clear up my confusion. Thanks.

Besides the tablets, what else could possibly drive up the CYA level?

Yup. For the most part that's it. There could be a few other things on certain occasions but Pool School will help you learn those through your testing.

Hmm, not finding much other than it looks like replacement parts are difficult to come by. I did notice that the original install instructions talked about fuses so you might try shutting off the breaker to the main controller and verify that none of the fuses are blown, but that is about all I can find at this point.

Cleaning my Waterfall,

Since my waterfall pump had not been off for a while, so the water where the rock sit is all dirty. I empty all the dirty water out so now it's yall yucky there. Before I get my waterfal pump running, I like to clean those area on the rock. Could I just let the water pump run and let all the dirty stuff run down to the pool and filter it?

Any suggestion?

If there are gaps/pockets, try to use a ShopVac if you have one to remove as much junk as you can. They you can hit it with a mixture of bleach and water (maybe 4/1 ratio), let it soak/brush, the ShoVac again. You want to try and remove as much of the old stuff as you can before just allowing it to run into your clean (already SLAMmed) pool. You don't want all that hard work to go to waste. :) You can't prevent it all though, and some junk will go in. So before you finally activate the waterfall, consider bumping-up your pool's FC a bit to fight-off any organics that may trickle in from the waterfall.

oK I removed all the old water in the rocks pocket and bleach it all out. Getting ready to run the waterfall tomorrow once the pump is fixed.

Ok I did test of the pool water chemistry today and this is the result:
FC=5 CC=0 TC=5
TA= 70
CH=425 ppm
CYA 60

Isnt' my TA level a bit too low? If so, how do I raised up the TA level?

Your TA is fine Newbie. It's your FC that's low at the moment. For a CYA of 60, your daily target is 7. 5 is the absolute lowest, so I would add some bleach right away to get you to about 7-8. You don't want to let that nasty algae back in. I didn't see your pH listed, but just make sure you are somewhere around 7.5-7.8 and you'll be fine. Have a nice evening.

There is a +/- 15 ppm variance on any given test, so don't beat yourself up too badly. But do what I do:
While holding the skinny tube with the black dot at waist level, begin squirting the mixed solution into the skinny tube. Watch the black dot until it completely disappears. Turn your eyes away from time to time too. Once it disappears, record the CYA reading. After the first test, pour the mixed solution from the skinny view tube back to the mixing bottle, shake, and do the same test a second, third, or fourth time to instill consistency in your technique, become more comfortable with the testing, and validate the CYA reading.

Try to find a good, reliable average of tests.

And of course ... Proper lighting is important for the CYA test. You want to test for CYA outside on a sunny day, but keep the skinny view tube in the shade. Taylor recommends standing in the sun with your back to the sun and the view tube in the shade of your body. Put this great Texas weather to good use today. :sun:

Do you have an auto fill? Your answer will tell us what you need to do next.

CYA test---------I just GLANCE at the dot as I fill the tube. If you stare you WILL see the dot LOL. Glance in and look away. If you can still see the dot add some more. Glance and repeat until you cannot see the dot at a glance!
