Not exactly. The main problem with CYA being too high is that once it gets over 80-90, you need a much higher FC level to compensate as noted on the Pool School - Chlorine / CYA Chart. That CYA chart is EVERYTHING when it comes to balancing our water for proper sanitation. Too low of CYA and our FC gets burned-off by the sun too quickly. Too high and it simply becomes too difficult to manage, and if you ever need to SLAM again, it requires a lot of bleach. Once CYA gets too high, the only way to lower it is by partial water drain/exchange.
In our area, we can go with a CYA anywhere from 50-70 easily because it gets so hot. My pool is in full sun all day, so I keep my CYA at 60-70. It helps protect my valuable FC during the day, but I watch it closely to never let it drop below my FC target level on that chart.
