Hey guys,
My water is well above the skimmer and I’m pre planning what I may need to do regarding the chemistry.
1). Should I just syphon water out with standard garden hose or should I use the filter somehow I.e. drain it to waste with the rubber rolled up hose? What’s the process for that?
2). I have a SWG and my chlorine has been running around 2-3 ppm…..I expect it to be lower. Also my stabilizer is over 100 ( that’s how they set it up when they installed pool). I assume my CYA will drop a bit after draining water. Currently I have swg at 40% and running for 9 hours.
3) if chlorine is very low should I add bleach or liquid chlorine? What is the preferred choice? Sounds like TFP doesn’t use powder shock.

Pool is 10x20 fiberglass

It sounds like you have a backwash hose correct? That means you have either a DE or sand filter. If so, and if you have a multiport valve, you can set it to WASTE and drain water that way. That should help lower the CYA a bit which it appears you depserately need to do anyway. Once you lower the water level, then run a new set of tests and balance accordingly. Hope that helps get you started.

Yes I used backwash hose and came out like a firehouse! lol. I don’t have my TF 100 salt yet so used dipsticks that came with pool. Cya is around 100 and Cl appears white at basically zero. Ph and alkalinity look fine. Water looks beautiful . Should I go get some liquid chlorine to quickly boost it up to a proper amount? 6-8 ppm?
Currently I’m set at 40% for 9 hours per day

Yes, do the best you can with that for now. Tough without the proper test kit (yet), but once it arrives you'll be able to get accurate results.

I just found a link on TfP…..I think I’ll buy a three pack of 10 chlorine from Home Depot …..looks like approx 1/2 gal in my 6000 gallon pool will raise me up to 8 ppm or so. Continue to keep the SWG settings where they are?
 
If you can vacuum manually, kill two birds with one stone. Manually vacuum to waste.

You need to fill out your signature with the type of equipment on your pool. We don't know the size of your SWG so we can't say if 9 hours of operation provides enough FC. We don't know if you have a VSP. If you do, it would be beneficial to run the pump slower. For 24 hour operation, use PoolMath to determine the output percentage for your SWG for 24 hour operation. Then through testing, tweak the output to fine turn the SWG for your pool's chlorine needs.

So are you suggesting that I do not buy some liquid chlorine? Currently my dipstick is basically reading zero It was recently around 2 ppm. CYA around 100 SWG set at 40% If I just Jack it up to 100% will that get me there? I didn’t want to tax the generator too much. So , thought maybe raise cl with liquid chlorine and then keep it steady with the generator?

SWG can be good at maintaining FC, but aren't good at raising it quickly.

Fill out your signarure with pool, all pool equipment (include manufacturers and model numbers) and test kit info.

Thanks. I believe I just updated my signature. I will pick up chlorine today. Am ordering TF100 salt kit now. That kit seems overwhelming for sure

No, I was not suggesting that you don't use liquid chlorine to raise FC. I was suggesting that once your FC is the proper level, you look to see if the SWG can maintain those proper levels based on the time you are operating it. Without knowing what SWG you have, it's hard to say if 9 hours is enough time to maintain FC.

Thank you. Added liquid chlorine today and raised FC to around 10 ppm. I lose it pretty quickly in this heat so let’s see where the SWG holds it at.

Turned out to be a two person operation with wife watching water level and me holding the backwash hose . When I finished I ran into a neighborhood pool service guy and I saw he was working on neighbors pool. I asked him how he does it….he said that he backwashes the pool and it’s less powerful shooting the water out, plus you get to backwash your sand so a win win. I’ll try it next time
