We turned on the pump first time this year and the filter is leaking both sides where it's the top black part is screwed onto the actual filter. I attached a picture. It qas pouring out a lot but after a couple of minutes it slowed down. Still leaked but not near as much. Do we need to replace the whole top? Just replaced the valve part last year.

What model filter and MPV are we discussing?

There is likely an O ring at that joint. You need to check the manual to see the parts buildup.

I don't know what MPV is?
Multiport Valve. Below is the parts breakdown for your filter. Perhaps something froze and cracked over the winter, or the O-ring just needs to be inspected, lubed, and set back into place. If it's still leaking, I would try to lift the MPV up (carefully) to inspect everything, re-lube, and see if it will seat properly without leaking. Hopefully your plumbing has unions that allow you to disconnect the lines from the filter first, otherwise, if they were all glued together, you would have to cut the lines just to remove the MPV.
