WOW! I am so excited for you and your pool is beautiful! I am a new pool owner who simply followed my "pool school" instructions since last October. My water stayed clear but I was getting some slight scaling and it took me 10 days of SLAMing to get straightened out. My husband mentioned paying someone to come out and take over and I was also determined that this forum was the answer. WOOT!! Yesterday I was almost confused by not having to dump LQ in my pool all day. ha! I came across your thread while obsessively reading, hoping that I have/will learn enough to never ever have to SLAM again. haha! I was totally enthralled and cheering you on while reading every single post! Best wishes and Happy Pool Season!

Hey everyone just wanted to post a pic of how beautiful my pool still is. Glad all the insanity is over. It is really easy to keep it beautiful once the slam was completed. Test daily and that’s really all for now. Maintaining levels shown in pool math. It finally is as easy as you all said it would be. :):)

@Beerfloater your story is very instructive for others on how long the SLAM Process can take and the need for patience.

Can you summarize how long it took from start of SLAM to meeting the exit criteria? And how many gallons of chlorine did it take?

You have any tips that you wish you knew when you started?

Yea I think @wireform is right. I don’t think it would have taken as long if I had changed the sand from the start. Or nearly the amount of chlorine. So I would not look to this thread to know how long slam takes for that reason. But the thread literally started from the day I uncovered the pool and the dates are posted so it shows how long it took, and I did not keep count of the chlorine but if I had to guess I would say I used at least 25 gallons, but again think that was due to the extended SLAM due to filter issue. It was only days after the filter issue was fixed till slam was over.

OK so did the CYA test. I think it is safe to say that I dont have any. I attached a pic of the test. As you can see the tube is full of the solution, and you can still see the dot. My wife was good enough to buy me some knee high panty hose :laughblue:so I will add some stabilizer to the mix tomorrow. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to know..... I am still puzzled by the white foam floaters all over the pool. Hoping they will go away when everything else gets to where it needs to be.
I had white floaters for a while last summer. It finally occurred to me to change out the sand in my filter. OMG! That was definitely my problem. Make sure you clean out the filter also, change out the sand (if you have a sand filter) that way the yucky water doesn't continue to circulate into the pool. A day or so after I got that completed my SLAM was done. My SLAM went on for over a month.

Wow, great job! Your pool looks fantastic! :whoot::cheers:

Did you ever find out what the staining was? If it wasn't algae, it might be metal staining. Metal stains are primarily a cosmetic issue, so not urgent, but in some of your pictures it looked like your steps might have some brownish staining on them too which makes me think iron staining might be a possibility. To check, take a vitamin C tablet and rub it on the stain for a minute. If it's iron the stain will disappear pretty quickly, if it's copper either nothing will happen, or it may darken.
