We’re looking to redo our pool.
The one builder shy came in wants to take out some of the paving on the one side of the pool and build a sun shelf onto the pool. He said he has been doing this to hundreds of pools and never had any problems

The second builder told us that you can build into an existing pool but you can’t build onto an existing pool. He said this would cause a cold bond and will crack and leak and give us problems. He said nobody in the pool industry would ever do this.

Any advice? Dont know whose right and whose wrong? Can we build a sun shelf onto an existing pool?

You can build onto an existing pool using the correct construction techniques. Sufficient rebar needs to be epoxied into holes in the existing pool to tie into the rebar of the new extension. Concrete staples can be used to tie new and old gunite together so nothing will move or crack. It is up to the knowledge, experience, and quality of the crew doing the work.
