Hi all

Long story short, after a long weekend away came back home to a cloudy pool, FC=0 and SWG in error.

Now day 10 of SLAM, passed OCLT 2 nights in a row so now confident there is no more nasties in the water and SLAM is over.

However I am still losing about 14-16ppm FC in a 24h period... Is that normal or ok?

Thanks

Not at all. No more than 4 ppm loss of FC in a 24 period really. Can you confirm your current CYA and the FC level you've been trying to maintain?

CYA testing has been an issue for some reason. Pre SLAM level was 60-70 so I aimed for SLAM FC of 28.
Last addition of LC was Tuesday morning raising to 28. FC was 13.5 Tuesday evening before OCLT and 13 this morning. Had similar results the day before.
Could it be my CYA levels are much lower than tested and I’m losing FC to sunlight?

Your CYA would have to be very low to lose all your chlorine in one day, but if your testing is off or the reagents old/compromised, it's a possibility. Since you're not losing hardly any FC overnight, the CYA test would be suspect. Are you using the Clear Choice Labs' CYA test?

Not sure which CYA test product you have, but this is my CYA reminder:
Proper lighting is critical for the CYA test, so you want to test for CYA outside on a bright sunny day. Taylor recommends standing outside with your back to the sun and the view tube in the shade of your body. Use the mixing bottle to combine/gently mix the required amounts of pool water and R-0013 reagent, let sit for 30 seconds, then gently mix again. Then, while holding the skinny tube with the black dot at waist level, begin squirting the mixed solution into the skinny tube. Watch the black dot until it completely disappears. If it helps, pour a little, look away, then look back and pour some more. Once it disappears, record the CYA reading. After the first test, you can pour the mixed solution from the skinny view tube back to the mixing bottle, shake, and do the same test a second, third, or fourth time to instill consistency in your technique, become more comfortable with the testing, and validate the CYA reading. If you are still questioning your own results, have a friend or two do the same test 2-3 times. Share your results only after everyone is done to see if you came up with the same average results.

Hi all

I'd say my CYA is 30, maybe less.
Tested yesterday afternoon, my sample wasn't large enough to fill the tube to the 30 mark, but half way between 30 and 40, and the symbol was still quite visible.

I guess that would explain the large loss of FC during daytime, with a OCLT of 0-0.5ppm

Raising CYA now with left over TriChlor pucks. I've got 4x 200g left which should raise my CYA by 12ppm according to pool maths.
I'll retest CYA once used up and will top up with plain CYA to reach 60ppm, now we're getting towards the end of the season.

I've never used pucks before, so what's the best way to use in a float dispenser? All 4 pucks at once or 1 at a time?

Cheers

If your floater will hold them all, put them in. Will take a couple weeks for them to dissolve. Not sure you want to wait that long.

I would. Keep the trichlor for when you will be away from home for a week or so. Even with a SWCG, it is good to use some pucks when you are gone for more than a few days. Just test your CYA when you return to be sure your FC is kept at target.

You have to let them dry. I try to just add one or two pucks to a floater when I am gone for more than a week as I know they will dissolve. It backs up the SWCG, adds some acid to control pH, and the CYA just needs to be tested and FC adjusted afterward.
